But.... GM200 has both high memory clocks and wide bus...

 

 

I mean "you can't have your cake and eat it?"

but it's hot and loud compared to the 960

Low being a relative term. His comment was a specific dig against HBM which looks to be uhh really inefficient running at faster speeds...

 

At least both Fiji and GM200 don't have the same power spiking issues Hawaii has...

The retooled bios is better at handling peaking yes... It's still worse than every modern graphics card out there...

I think that given the gpu's before/concurrent/after it, the PCB/power delivery was not the issue for power spiking.

 

Indeed if it were, you would have expected the 295x2 to be radically different yet it suffered the same issue.

 

The newer more efficient components did of course take some low hanging fruit away.

295x2 was using high-binned chips - rest was the same. Look at the 390X2 (PCS+ one)

Unless you mean to say that AMD completely failed to learn from the mistakes of the original hawaii launch...

 

I haven't seen any power timings on the 390x2

Yep - 295X2 wasn't great on the power delivery either

The thing is, HBM hardly needs faster clock rates. Even if AMD kept the 500 MHz HBM RAM speed with HBM 2.0, it would likely still be way fast enough. HBM 1.0 RAM is plenty fast as it is, it just needs higher capacities.
