980 TI enough for Ultrawide 1440p?

Howlrunner

Hi all,

I am in the middle of my first build and am experiencing a mid-build crisis. I have everything that I need but a monitor. I'll be running a 5820k along with an EVGA SC+ ACX 2.0+ 980 TI. Is this enough to power an ultrawide 1440p monitor for gaming?

Also, any ultrawide suggestions?

Thanks!

yeah

probably not ultra settings though on intensive AAA games, you will have to drop down to high if you still want to get a consistent 60fps

but with a 2nd ti it should be able to do AAA titles on 1440p easy maxed

While I might be able to get a second 980 ti, it would limit my budget for a monitor. Would it be better to designate my remaining budget to another card or a better monitor?

I'd personally get the monitor. You hold on to a monitor longer than you do a graphics card

Desktop: The Bluez | CPU: i5-3570k @ 4.5 ghz 1.296V | CPU Cooler: Hyper 212 Evo | Motherboard: P8Z77 M-Pro | Memory: 16 GB 1600Mhz Kingston HyperX

GPU: Asus GTX 780ti DirectCu II | HDD: Some Random Hitachi 1TB, WD Blue 1TB, 850 EVO 500GB | PSU: Rosewill Hive 750W | Case: Enermax Ostrog GT (Blue Ver.)

What monitor would work well for a single 980 ti? Based on my calculations, 1440p ultrawide gets about 75% FPS of a regular 1440p. So I probably won't be breaking too much past 60Hz, on average.

What I'm comparing is the Acer XR341CK vs the X34. I know that the XR has FreeSync, but would I really be able to take advantage of the G-Sync on a X34? (Ignoring price and just on an empirical standpoint).

I would say a single 980 ti at 3440x1440 is really one of the best case scenarios for taking advantage of gsync. Frame rates will dip below 60 frequently at that resolution and gsync will make that more tolerable. The xr341ck would be a waste if you're not going to take advantage of freesync so I would rule that out. I think you really have two options here. You can get the x34 and let gsync smooth out frame rate dips or you could get a second 980 ti and pair it with a 60hz monitor and run your games with vsync on. You're spending about the same amount of money either way.
