Video Editing Custom Rig

This is what I would do...

  • E3 Xeon, because it has hyperthreading and comes in at a low price
  • 16GB of RAM are enough
  • H97
  • BitFenix Fury PSU, because it has those amazing cables
  • AMD R9 380 from XFX, because it is a beast of a card at its price point.

Hello guys,

I'd like to upgrade my current rig which can be found on my signature below to the following PC Part Picker list

http://pcpartpicker.com/p/69LTQ7

I just wanted to know will I be okay with these upgrades to do some music video editing. My current rig just can't keep up. I was also wondering, if it would be okay to skimp out on the video card to upgrade the CPU further. I know everyone is going to recommend me to an Intel chip, but I'm an AMD guy, I love the red and black lol. I'll change if absolutely necessary, but looking to stick with a brand I love.

AMD Ryzen 5 3600, ASUS B350-F Gaming, Trident Z RGB 3200MHz 16GB, PowerColor Red Devil 5600 XT, NZXT H500, 1x512GB Seagate Barracuda NVMe, 2x2TB Firecuda 7200RPM, 1x250GB Intel SSD (Cache), 1x4TB Seagate 7200RPM Ironwolf (Backup), 650w EVGA Bronze

Few things:

- 32GB of RAM is massive overkill IMO, even heavy editing will be fine with 16.

- You're sticking with AMD because "you love red and black" please explain? You can have a red and black Intel build. Hell, I have one.

Just always been an AMD guy. Like I said if it's a must change to get better results I'll do it. I think I've had an AMD rig for maybe the last 10 years, except one laptop I had was an I-3

Hmm, difficult. AMD CPUs really are plain worse than Intel's at this stage in the game, but the extra cores could be useful for a budget-ish workstation.

OK, I wont comment on your parts. But let me tell you a few recent surprising discoveries about video editing.  There are a few people on this forum who work with 4K video, and have some nice multi core workstations and Adobe Premiere Pro, though I am not sure which NLE you will use to edit videos nor what resolutions/frame rates you will be working with.

  • Adobe Premiere Pro maxes out efficiency at around 6 CPU cores.  Anything more than that the efficiency gain tends not to be worth the cost.
  • A two-way SLI setup of something like a 780TI is sufficient to perform color grading of 4K footage, it even performs better than a Quadro card.
  • For the GPU, if you can afford it, get something better than a 780ti with more VRAM.  As I said, if you can justify the budget.

I would recommend this is would be so much better for everything you want to do, plus 4 cores with hyper threading, and you would be in alot better place for gaming. Also even if you don't get this build get the powersupply for a strong cheap-ish powersupply. :D

Edit: Yes please consider an Intel chip over an AMD its just better in every-way, admitted a little more pricey though

I guess I gotta hop on that Intel. I keep hearing so many wonderful things, I guess it comes down to I'm cheap lol. But I know I can't be cheap with everything and this will be my money maker, so I guess I need to spend a few bones.

Okay, I'm going to go ahead and grab a 6-core. Right now I'm only editing in 1080p, but I know for sure I'm upgrading my camera equipment next year so I may be doing 2-4K.

Read the links first, before deciding anything.  But a 6 core/12 thread Intel CPU will last you a few years.  If you can already put 32GB of memory into your budget get it.  A SSD, at least for the OS, would be nice to have.  And get a good GPU with at least 4-6GB of VRAM, the VRAM will help.

NO, don't get that CPU.  Even a quad core CPU with a faster clock speed will outperform that Xeon when it comes to video editing.

If it fits into your budget, why not?

I don't know how its clockspeed is going to effect performance. You'll need a 2011-3 motherboard and DDR4 RAM to use it.

Maybe use a cheaper graphics card instead then.

The quad core Xeon you listed in your PPP list will out perform the 6 core Xeon the OP is considering.

Should be more than sufficient to handle 1080p video editing.

You don't need a Z97 board for a locked CPU.

You will not have any upgrade options for your RAM, because you will populate all four slots at once.

Corsair CX PSUs are not made to handle intensive tasks. Read more about it here: http://www.overclock.net/t/1431436/why-you-should-not-buy-a-corsair-cx
