Screw trouble... Please help!

Go to solution Solved by Tedster,

Please don't use washers on your mobo screws. The mobo insulates itself just fine if you're doing things properly.

As for which screws to use, judging by what I used the first ones.

Really if they work with the threading of the standoffs and they don't protrude past the ring on the mobo around the screwhole and they get you to the right height they're all fine.

Hi, im a first time pc builder and I'm not sure which screws to use for what. My case instructions don't clearly label anything. I have these three screws:

2: post-281535-0-25264900-1448806775.jpg

3: post-281535-0-65285200-1448806775.jpg

What screws do I need for my mobo? Also, by the way, do I need insulating/non-conductive washers on my mobo screws?

Sig under construction.

Should normally be either No. 2 or No. 3.  No. 1 looks like they might be for the case or CPU cooler mounts.  Usually the logic board package contains the right amount of screws or a bit more than necessary to mount it to the case, so if either of the 3 types of screws you show have less than the amount necessary then they aren't it.

Insulation? It helps to ground the motherboard as there are metal contacts where the screws sit.

Besides, even if it made no difference, you're acting like it's wrong to use them. It wouldn't be.

But it does make a difference, so it would be wrong to use them, correct?

Because the standoffs and IO sheild ground the MB and IO area to the case/PSU/wall

No. Using washers on your screws does not do anything harmful - like I said, the screw holes can contain metal contacts to help ground the motherboard to the case.

but if there are washers, the standoffs wouldent touch that.

Or are you saying the screw itself is the thing that is conductive between MB and standoffs?

Number 3 are the correct ones however 2 would also be fine.

Main Rig:-

Ryzen 7 3800X | Asus ROG Strix X570-F Gaming | 16GB Team Group Dark Pro 3600Mhz | Corsair MP600 1TB PCIe Gen 4 | Sapphire 5700 XT Pulse | Corsair H115i Platinum | WD Black 1TB | WD Green 4TB | EVGA SuperNOVA G3 650W | Asus TUF GT501 | Samsung C27HG70 1440p 144hz HDR FreeSync 2 | Ubuntu 20.04.2 LTS |

Server:-

Intel NUC running Server 2019 + Synology DSM218+ with 2 x 4TB Toshiba NAS Ready HDDs (RAID0)

I'm saying that yes the screws are conductive and because of that, touching those metal contacts helps to ground the board to the case.

Ok, makes sence

I think he's thinking of metal washers.

I cannot be held responsible for any bad advice given.

I've no idea why the world is afraid of 3D-printed guns when clearly 3D-printed crossbows would be more practical for now.

My rig: The StealthRay. Plans for a newer, better version of its mufflers are already being made.

And in this case, the wasters integrated into the screw. Non-conductive washers won't do anything.

Hey, just wondering but I never thought of the grounding of the mobo through the screws.  My first cheap case (DIYPC shadow) came with washers (see spoiler) and said to use them on the mobo screws like pictured and I've been using them ever since.  Now last week my motherboard quit working while I was redoing some things inside.  I was careful to frequently ground myself to my case, psu plugged in with the switch off.  Looking at how the standoffs sit behind the mobo they do not make good contact with the contacts on the motherboard.  So I should definitely ditch these non conductive washers right?  I've got a new mobo on the way and would hate to fry that one too
