7950 or 7970

RyanMacRocks

I am building a gaming PC for my friend, and am looking at two GPU's on Craigslist. One is a 7950 Boost with an aftermarket cooler (Arctic Cooling) for $75 and the other is a reference MSI 7970 for $105. In your opinion, is the extra $30 for the 5-10 FPS worth it in this type of budget build? I would be fine going with either as they are both good deals. Still trying to decide what CPU these will be paired up with, but I think it is going to be something like a q9650/i5 750/i7 860 depending on how good of a deal I get on Craigslist or eBay.

7950 since it has a better cooler...reference on these is bad...also watch out make sure those weren't used for extensive bitcoin mining or something.

Ok, I will look out for that. I offered the guy with the 7970 $80 and I might go with that if he accepts. Just sent both a text asking if they were used for mining.

7970 reference cooler is good - keeps it bellow 77*C - don't listen to nonsense. Get the reference 7970 if you can

EDIT: 7970 is usually 15-20fps ahead btw

Ok, at what price would you recommend I go for the 7970 over the 7950? If the 7970 guy is firm on the asking price, should I still go with him or stick with the 7950?

7970 - the difference was a LOT bigger back then and it was still worth - 20fps is no joke

you're complete bullshit! it's more like 5 to 8FPS...

With a slight overclock, that 7950 boost will put the reference 7970 to rest...EASILY, i know i owned one!

EVEN if they were the same price i would still pick the aftermarket 7950 boost. hands down!

Good for you - the 7970 can be OCed as well, shocking, I know. The cooler is not a factor since the 7970's cooler was MUCH better than the 290X cooler you are thinking of - the original 7970 (not GHz Ed.) was around 72*C with that thing

not at all the reference cooler on these is PURE garbage and the cards trottled even AT STOCK under this ABYSMAL cooling solution.

These cards throttle at 85*C - do you see 85*C anywhere?

I DID!!

Proof? You're starting to sound like Patrick - those are with stock settings and OC settings - nowhere does it mention 100% fan speed.

At the end of the day the trashy reference 7970 is 30$ more which represent a WHOOPING 40% price increase vs the 7950boost...which is better across the board: will reach the same performance while running cooler and MUCH quieter.

Please keep it peaceful and avoid the overly large text. It doesn't help prove your point in any way. Bold or italics in normal sized font is the only thing required.

I suppose the 7970 isn't the GHz edition, so the difference between it and 7950 Boost is smaller. - http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/2012/08/16/amd-radeon-hd-7950-3gb-with-boost/3

The 7970 would have been a decent option if it wasn't with the reference cooler which sounds like this.

Also, the better cooling on the 7950 would allow some overclock.

Spending $30 is not justified imo.

This goes for anyone who may be under the age of 16. This is not targeted at anyone in particular, but as an FYI to anyone who reads this thread. If the person is under the age of 16, it is never okay to post their age or for them to post it.

Guys calm down, I understand both of your arguments. The 7950 Boost is slightly slower than the 7970 but is quieter and allows for better overclocks than the 7970. In the end I will be looking at around 10-30% better performance from the 7970 after overclocking the 7950. I am well aware of the performance differences and just wanted to see if you guys thought the extra performance benefit would be worth the extra money in such a budget build.

Btw, Linus was getting about 5-10 FPS difference between the 7950 Boost OC and 7970 ref.
