$4000 X99 M-ATX BUILD

Torvach

Im currently in the process of ordering some fancy new parts for this here Workstation/Gaming rig that is by far the highest end computer I've ever decided to go through with. But before I go ahead and purchase these parts, I'd like to hear everyones opinions and suggestions. Here is the parts list link:

http://pcpartpicker.com/p/ZCwmwP

This computer will be used for a lot of 2560x1440 gaming at 144Hz (hopefully). And it will also be used for a lot of Video editing and rendering in Sony Vegas Pro (Hence the choice of Haswell-E and not Skylake). I know that OpenCL on AMD cards gives great benefit to render times on Sony Vegas, and for a while I was intrigued by the Fury X as well as the greater scaling with Crossfire. But even with those in mind I still lean towards the GTX 980 ti with its solid performance and overclockability. And i dont have to mount two 120 rads in the front of my case. So please, throw out suggestions and thoughts as i will build this computer before the New Year. After I have finalized my parts and built it i will gladly post benchmarks for those that might be interested as well.

It looks really good, sure as hell gonna be using every last inch of space in that 350D though.

Yea that was the plan haha. Ive used this case before in lesser builds. And i really do love the build quality and the layout of the case. But i like a case that looks full. Plus the need of a smaller build was high as i will have to ship the completed computer. (GPU's removed of course) back to my house in about 6 months when i return from over seas.

get an HGST drive over that WD black 4 tb drive

noctua fans generally aren't really worth it over something like this

You could also get nearly twice as much SSD storage if you went with 480gb drives from another company like adata which still have 500mb read/write

You're better off with 2 non X Fury cards and a free-sync display as far as performance per dollar goes, though the 1440p 144hz IPS free-sync display only goes to 90hz due to it's implementation, I think all of the TN 144hz displays go up to .144hz for free-sync

although the only games that really gain anything from high refresh rates are twitch shooters, you're better off with something like the Wasabi Mango

4k or 120hz@1080p, and has free-sync, you just gotta make room for the 40" display which is going to be unmatched for productivity

As far as the 4TB WD i do agree with you, but i actually had the noctua fans laying around the house already so they will just be reused (cant loose with that lol)

I wasnt really too concerned with the price to performance ratio when picking out the gpu's. I do agree with you whole heartidly that AMD does have better price to performance ratios. But I couldnt help going with something that has a little more umph even with the higher price point. And i do play my fair share of twitch shooters CS:GO for example. And im still iffy on 4k as of the moment. I do agree the productivity would be insane. But i might just pick up a secondary display rather than having a single 4k monitor

And in all honesty i dont need a full ATX board. I wont be adding any other pcie cards and there is still plenty of room for a lot of storage.

Yes actually. I would have built another ATX like in my old HAF-X. But i am currently deployed over seas and shipping back a smaller M-ATX build will be easier on both the weight and likelyhood of something breaking. And the cost.

The problems that i have with these parts are the 5900RPM drives. Just having one drive with good read and write speeds at only a capacity of 500GB isnt worth it to me. And the 3000MHz memory at 64GB's is no real benefit to me. Sure i could partition half of it for extremely fast storage and throw a few games on there or sony vegas pro but its unlikely for me to do. And even though the Fury X is a step forward to the future of GPU's given the HBM memory and Partial DirectX 12 Support, at 4GB it will fall off on future triple A titles with higher textures and on a high res monitor.

Yes ive seen benchmarks where fury x's have come out on top of the titan x. But the gtx 980ti is much more capable than both. I can have the card running at 1400MHz straight out of the box with gpu boost alone. Something the fury x cannot do because of voltage limitations. I wish that the fury x was on par with the gtx 980 because frankly. I reallylike the sleek and simple design of it. But sadly its just not on par with a gtx 980 ti that has an aftermarket cooler.

Having only 4gbs of VRAM doesn't seem to affect 4k gaming as of yet, plus DX12 should be able to utilize the VRAM of both GPUs rather than mirroring it

If you want a really compact PC you could always go with an Elite 110 case and a Fury Nano which can easily fit into a backpack

Also they just unlocked the voltage on Fury cards, though overclocking overall doesn't seem too great.

However remember linus's video from a little ways back about the Fury X vs 980ti in a small form factor case?

Having 2 980tis in a cramped space can hinder your GPU boost capabilities potentially if there's thermal limits being hit, the Fury X has the advantage of the radiators, though you need to find a micro ATX case capable of handling 1 240mm rad and 2 120mm rads potentially

I did actually consider this option for a long while. But i ultimately decided that i did want to do either a crossfire or sli setup as ive done them for others. But never had one for myself. And i also wanted some overclock headroom for the gpu amd cpu, mainly the cpu as even though great for multitasking/rendering. The 5820K does bottleneck certain games at stock speeds. So i opted for the improved air flow of a larger case. But not to large of a case. And yes the 4gb doesnt seem to affect games as of yet. But seeing as im spending 4k. I will have this computer for quite a while. Possibly to the point that 4GB would hender the performance.

And yes i do remember the video, but the case used is a lot more cramped than a 350d. But i do see where you are coming from.

Yeh the 350D is a really nice case, I wanted one as well but then I ended up going full ATX instead and got a 450D. I later gave that back for an Air 540 for the ATX cube form factor, which is actually really nice. I just wish the Air 540 had a basement on the motherboard side.

As far as the bottlenecking goes ya, that's kind of an issue with trying to run every game at  1440p 144hz, which is why 4k is more attractive as the CPU isn't going to bottleneck you.

I edit my posts a lot, Twitter is @LordStreetguru just don't ask PC questions there mostly...

Spoiler

Thats understood. But then If i settle for 4k my GPU's fall to the test of time. Sure with this setup they would run games fine at 4k now. But a year or two from now the new tripple A titles will be harsh on them at 4k. Whilst at 1440p they will stand the test pf time much longer.
