960 4GB SLI or 970?

unknownindividual
Go to solution Solved by TheSLSAMG,

From the two, the dual GTX 960s perform a fair amount better. And before someone says it, they can use all 4GB VRAM just fine. And unless the game is DX12, VRAM does not stack.

For the money that two GTX 960 4GBs would cost though, you can get a GTX 980. And that's a much better choice in terms of upgrade path.

I have always wanted a 960 but some people try to turn me to a higher card cause "it's only $__ more". I hope to get the single 960 and then when I have more money buy another 960 for SLI. Also, apparently DX12 will allow both cards vram to be in use. So does that mean I will have 8gb?

VRAM would only stack in DX12 games of which there are currently none, and nVidia's DX12 support is spotty in the 9xx series.

Always buy the single best card you can and if you want more performance later, SLI it.

its a rumor, we dont know yet but maybe it will stack, or not

Games won't have full support for DX12 for a very long time, so you should go with one card instead of dual 960. The R9 390(x) would be your best option price/performance wise

Only if devs implement the feature, if you want to stay team green go 970, otherwise get a 390
