I've recently started to notice how bloated windows is and have started realizing how it's really not worth the $100 that Microsoft charges for it. I ran Ubuntu once on a virtual machine and noticed how smoothly it ran on a single core on a core 2 duo from around 2011 and 1 GB of ram. So my question is, what's the state of Linux gaming? Are there a decent number of titles available? What about drivers? Is running windows in a virtual machine or running wine for windows games a good idea?

My specs: i7 4790k

16GB ram

250GB Samsung 850 evo

2 tb wd green

EVGA GTX 970 SSC+

As an active linux user for almost all things, I cannot in any way recommend it over windows for gaming. There is a reason all of my computers except for my main desktop have linux, and its because its an excellent OS that performs wonderfully. Except for when you want software to work. As Iike to say, "Anything is possible in linux, given enough time and effort. And you may have to write your own OS, but its still possible". There are pro's and cons, and I highly recommend you look into using linux, but if your primary concern is gaming, then sadly, there is just not enough support for it. Just to get the %5 of games that do run "easily" to work requires far more effort than its worth. However, for anything else except MS Office, GO LINUX!!!

Depends on what games in your game library supports Linux. Pretty much all Valve games do.
