Rip linux distro strawpoll

Interesting.  I see no reason why a poll like this shouldn't reflect actual market share if it's posted in the right places, so this seems to tell us something

Solve your own audio issues  |  First Steps with RPi 3  |  Humidity & Condensation  |  Sleep & Hibernation  |  Overclocking RAM  |  Making Backups  |  Displays  |  4K / 8K / 16K / etc.  |  Do I need 80+ Platinum?

well.. what OP is missing here is that this poll doesnt reflect market share, rather it reflects the market "preference"

i'd be under the "ubuntu & variants" market share, but my preference is arch.

Another Linux operating system I didn't know about... they must have more than 9000 different operating systems!

Well people on /r/linuxmasterrace are very enthusiastic about linux and like tweaking things, I guess I should have seen that arch and gentoo have massive appeal to that audience

Given how just about anyone can make them, there are probably even more than that.

arch has eaten my poll arch will consume all

But, why?  Why not use the one you prefer?  If you're not doing that, why are you using the one you do? :)

A lot of people probably just voted for Arch and have never even used it. lol

What do you mean?  It was a poll about the favourite distro - it's not like it won against windows or OSX :)

But, it was all linux distros... no matter what, one of them would have won... I don't get it   :(

I don't get why people like arch so much. You have to rely heavily on the user repo for applications that are only in deb or rpm like java or steam.

Have you tried it recently? More and more gets added to the official repos https://www.archlinux.org/packages/?name=steam

Okay? I was saying I don't mind which distro wins the poll (instead of getting butthurt over it or something) because I think they're all great...

That's the nice thing about linux distros, there is no 'best' one. Everyone has one they will prefer over others. Even the weird ones like apartheid, hannah montana, and justin bieber linux.

Oh, ok.  I just sounded like you were happy a linux distro won (vs something else like windows idk)

well... a lot of people in the linux community REALLY like arch.

i'd probably vote arch, even though its not my main distro, because its such an amazing distro to mess around on.

I used Arch a while ago it was great but you really need some time to waste on setting it up as you want it.

On my HTPC I use Ubuntu a lot easier and faster to maintain but nowhere near the performance of Arch.

the nice thing about arch is the freedom you get.

the downside of arch is the time you spend configuring your freedom.

It's the rolling release: yes you still run into issues but usually one at the time vs upgrade ubuntu every 6 months and a bunch of shit going wrong. Plus there's a preconfigured live version of Arch now that has the best of both worlds.

Also once you get into stuff like ultra light weight ultra responsive configs using Open box everything else feels like molasses.
