Hi everyone!

Situation:

- Desktop with win10 Pro, running 2 WD RED 4TB in RAID1 with data to be shared. (also dualbooting win7 Home)

- Laptop with win10 (Regular, non-pro, home, whatever you want to call it) needs to access the files.

I've shared the folders I need & I've also made a homegroup and shared those folders through this.

Problem:

When I boot up my Laptop it starts searching for shared folders/homegroup stuff and once everything is found, it works fine. I can access everything I want. However, when I leave my laptop on for a while without using the shared folders (either do nothing or browse or whatever), I can't access the files anymore. I can see the basic folders that I have shared, but I can't open them in any way.

Once I open them on my desktop again, I can access them on my laptop as well (or when I reboot).

It seems to me that once the drives on my desktop "go to sleep" from being inactive, my laptop is not allowed/ is unable to wake them up.

I have this sharing thing going for a few years now, used to work great, but a few things have changed and since then this problem occurs: used to be win7 (desktop) & win8.1 (laptop), used be a single 3TB HDD.

Any ideas on how to fix this?

When I'm home I'll try things out. I'll also try if the problem still occurs when I boot my win7 on the desktop.

Greetings,

Stef

try going into your desktops power settings and stopping the drives from spinning down (not an ideal solution but just to test if it is indeed your drives spinning down).... I know in my environment my computer will moan that it has to access to the shares once the drive has spun down on my server but a simple double click of the mapped drive folder on My Computer fixes it.

Sounds like you need to set your Power Settings on your desktop to not allow the hard drives to sleep!

Is home group allowed on your router? I had a similar problem and it turns out that my router was blocking it. I have the Apple Airport extreme.

Will definately try this out, but if this is the problem, I'm not gonna keep it that way. I want my drives to spin down, since that seems like a good idea to keep them alive longer.

Also, if that is really the problem it's probably a software thing as well, since it used to work fine back when I have win7&8.1 on the devices... :-( Weird thing is as well: when I just boot up my laptop, everything works. That means that it cán spin up the drives when booting up & searching for shared folders, just not after that...

Home group is definately allowed. Like I said, it works fine when I have just booted up my laptop.
