What res gaming? You could easily get away with a 6600k and a 390 at that budget (or less)

Hes going to be doing 1080 and 1440p. he wants to stick with a gtx 980ti.

I would stay with nvidia, but maybe go with a GTX 980, and bump the CPU a little higher. Also, what monitor are you going to use and what resolution are you going to play games at? If at 1080p, a 970 or a 390 would do easily. Those should even handle 1440p pretty well. Then you can splurge a little with money leftover on peripherals.
