R9390 is equal with the GTX 970, and the added 4GB of Vram makes it much more worth it. Then it's just between the R9 390X and the R9 390.

390x if you can afford the premium performs better.

Between the 970 and the 390 really depends on the resolution. the 8GB of VRAM in the 390's will do better in high resolutions.

Intel i5 6600k

Powercolor AMD R9 390

Don't forget that the 390 and 390X produce way more heat and consume more power too. If you are 1080p gaming, then go with 970. If you plan on gaming on anything bigger than that- 390X. Really up to your priorities.

390 and 970 a very close in performance, so edge to 390 for extra VRAM (assuming you aren't concerned with performance per watt).

Therefore: 390X all the way!  Leaves them both in the dust.  But the 8GB is overkill, since 1440 games don't need that much, and many 4k games will tax this card beyond it's capabilities unless you dial back their settings.

However, for 4k gaming with games that don't require as much oomph, or non-gaming purposes, it's more than capable.

yeah but 970 OCs better and uses less power than 390. 390 will only be better for QHD and 4k

Not really - an OCed 970 uses only 50-60W less than a 390 - that saves you 1 diet coke in 5 months or so as even a light bulb uses 75W. the TDP of the 970 is at stock 1000MHz, not 1500MHz (and a 1000MHz 970 is worthless). Also - the VRAM issue prevents it from caching in SYS RAM properly thus the stuttering when you pass that point.

BTW - the 390 has an average OC of 1200MHz

Ah thanks for the comments and help guys.

I've decided on the 390x as I have a 1000 watt psu and I'm not worried about the power usage.

get the Sapphire Nitro edition of 390. 390X is better, but it's hard to justify the extra cost. 970? nah, it has seen it's golden days.... don't get me wrong though, it's still a great card! but with the competition from the red team on the market, 970 is second best.

Yeah well I'm thinking of getting either the Power Color 390/390x.

It all depends on the money I have.

What do you guys think about the power color devil?

Is a all in one liquid cooled gpu just a bigger liability than a fan cooled?
