advice on new rig

I don't really think there's a big difference with m.2 drives. Correct me if I'm wrong.

• OS: Windows 10/10 Pro  • SSD: Samsung 256GB 850 Evo Series *  • HDD: Seagate 1TB  • GPU: MSI GeForce GTX 1070 GAMING X (SLI)
• CPU: i7-4790K OC 4.7GHz Quad-Core Processor • Case: NZXT H440 (Black/Red) • PSU: EVGA SuperNOVA NEX 650W
• RAM: G.Skill Ripjaws X Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR3-1600 Memory • Mobo: MSI Gaming 5

The Corsair Air 240 does only support motherboards up to micro ATX, but you chose an ATX motherboard.
The Corsair Air 540 is the case that supports ATX motherboards.

M.2 SSDs are nice, but not necessary for gaming. If you can get a M.2 drive for around the same price of a normal SSD it's fine, but I wouldn't pay much more. You'll most likely not even notice the performance difference.

m.2 would only help with the OS... no "real" performance boost for games

Something like a Samsung 950 Pro is about £0.5/GB currently and that gets 2.5GB/s reads, 1.5GB/s writes and around 120k IO/s. That is a substantial jump in IO performance over and above anything on the SATA interface regardless of what you spent on it. Its such a substantial jump but you then start getting into just how much of that bandwidth you can actually use. Games tend to decompress as they read and that results in most games having CPU dominated loading, the OS itself is heavily biased on smaller reads so benefits but does most of its actual work on loading only. Then there are applications and their uses and they will all be different. Its definitely faster, a lot faster, but whether you have a workload than will have you notice depends on how you use your computer.

A few years ago I tested an original Intel 80GB G1 SSD against a much more modern Samsung 850 evo in Java compilation speeds on a project I was working on. I found no benefit to the new one at all. I could see it in other places but Java compilation became completely CPU dominated the moment you put any SSD in there, the jump from a HDD to SSD was quite large. I find compressed and decompression are all dominated by CPU time not SSD read/write speeds and I also find all but a very few games don't even care about HDD v SSD let alone how fast that SSD actually is. So while its available and its faster its also more expensive. I just bought a 950 pro 512GB M.2 despite knowing all this, because well I'll have it for years and years and I hate spinning rust so much and I just plain need more space. But I don't necessarily recommend anyone else take that route, whether you have a use that will benefit is really for you to determine.

850 evo is fine ;) i got a 500gb too

lol at the case i saw the pictured and assumed it was big enough for atx LOL thanks for noticing

EDIT: change case to NZXT Source 340 Midi-Tower Case Special Edition - Black / Green rather not spend over £100 for a case seems  a waste of money as for the card 390? bit of a nvidia fan ill have to check out benchmarks

quiet dark rock 3 out of stock at my site and i like the smaller form factor of the corsair wont be doing very heavy overclocking thanks for the suggestion tho

Use http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/ to find the cheapest prices on your various components. It also checks the compatibility so you don't choose the wrong size motherboard or stuff like that c:

For 1080p a 980Ti is waaaaay overkill, an R9 390 is better (or an R9 380x if you want to spend less but sacrifice a little bit of performance). I'd suggest this:

CPU: Intel Core i5-6600K 3.5GHz Quad-Core Processor  (£191.94 @ Aria PC)
CPU Cooler: be quiet! PURE ROCK 51.4 CFM Sleeve Bearing CPU Cooler  (£24.95 @ Aria PC)
Motherboard: Asus Z170 PRO GAMING ATX LGA1151 Motherboard  (£114.47 @ Amazon UK)
Memory: Corsair Vengeance LPX 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR4-2400 Memory  (£43.49 @ Amazon UK)
Storage: Samsung 850 EVO-Series 250GB 2.5" Solid State Drive  (£59.99 @ Amazon UK)
Storage: Seagate Barracuda 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive  (£35.98 @ CCL Computers)
Video Card: PowerColor Radeon R9 390 8GB PCS+ Video Card  (£242.74 @ More Computers)
Case: NZXT S340 (Black) ATX Mid Tower Case  (£57.19 @ Amazon UK)
Total: £835.74
Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available

Well, when I say "an R9 390 is better" I mean that it's better suited to your use than a 980Ti, which is better suited for 1440p or higher gaming.

i notice everyone has recommend the be quite cooler over the corsair aio cooler ill have to change that too then

Asus Radeon R9 390X DC3 OC Strix 8192MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card

will be the card then

AiO's are fine, but the thing is:  You don't need to overclock for gaming... not for a very long time.  The tower coolers are quiet and allow for a good overclock.

I game on 1080 with a 980ti in the 1500mhz range, and struggle for 60fps in Gta V maxed out. It isn't over kill, it's for people who want absolute maxed settings

lol, wrong quote... but no, there is no raw performance difference in the two boards, only brand features.

Also, there are better quality PSUs in that price range.  The RM650X is okay, but you are paying extra for an "okay" PSU... http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/Corsair/RM650/11.html

Sorry, that is the wrong review... looking for others... The RMX line is better than the RM line, so it is not a "bad" choice.  You are paying more for the name though.

You tell me, that looks like a really nice PC... Can you squeeze in a 2x8GB Ram set?  Or does that put you way, way over?
