5820K/H100i GTX cooling issues

Just completed new build:

 

Asus X99 Sabertooth

5820K

Corsair H100i GTX

980 Ti SLI

32GB DDR4 Ripjaws 4 2400

 

Connected the H100i as instructions instructed. Power run to the CPU fan header.

 

However, when I booted up for the first time, the CPU temp, started to rise, and kept rising, all the way up to freaking 83C, AT IDLE! Voltage kept backing off it appeared, likely to keep temps down I'm assuming.

 

The other thing I noticed was that it said ERROR CPU FAN! on the opening screen... Why would it say this when I had the H100i hooked up to the CPU fan header? And why would the temp rise so high? It  shouldn't even be that high under load. 

 

The only thing I can think of is maybe the pump isn't working on the H100i? Is that why it is saying ERROR CPU FAN? 

 

I assume the two are related, but don't know for sure. I shut it back off as I didn't want it sitting there idling at that temp.

 

One last question, I saw where someone mentioned that they don't ever hook the H100i up to any Mobo fan header, rather they attach it straight to the PSU. Why is this?

Ehhh,, lets hope you didn't kill it...

 

Apparently you didn't have the pump hooked in properly or something, cause error cpu fan means the motherboard literally didn't detect anything there.

 

That isn't the same as it not being able to control the fan (I have my x61 hooked up on the same mobo right on the cpu header and it just runs top speed).

The h100i should be connected to a fan header on the motherboard (CPU_1) and a sata power. Doing this will power the pump and led. Make sure you have both of them connected.

This. Doesn't sound like the pump is getting power, does the LED on the waterblock light up?

Not sure what to say here. 

 

Plugged block into CPU FAN on Mobo... as stated in original post.

 

Plugged other two connectors into the two fans included.

 

Manual states that you plug Corsair link usb cable into USB port on Mobo, which I did. 

 

There's no other cables that I can see to hook up...

 

According to the manual this is correct.

 

Corsair emblem lights up on water block.

 

Again, the pump is plugged into CPU FAN. HOWEVER, it still states that CPU FAN ERROR.

RMA the pump. It should be working but clearly it isn't.

It shouldn't, but basically you didn't have a cooler on it for those two minutes. Heaven only knows what could have gone wrong.

Just to update, pump was DOA. Idle temps now down to 24C.
