Looking to buy a 6800k, but is there any motherboards that support richland right out of the box?

Yeah, but you're better off just installing the latest bios just to be safe.  Pretty easy, usually you can get an .exe file that you can install just like a driver.

Thats the thing though, I want it for my first build and the last thing I want is to end-up with a cpu and motherboard not working /:

I threw a 6800k into a cheap little $50 asrock with an A75 chipset, it worked fine after an update to the bios, if you want to make sure your CPU is compatible, take the motherboard serial number, google it, find it on the manufacturers site, look at CPU support list, and find if it says A10 and you'll be looking for a number sequence containing either 680k or 6800k.

Oh really? I was under the assumption that the cpu would straight out not work. What if I used a fx 6300 in a 760 chipset board that needs a bios update for the CPU to be officially recognised?

It ran fine with no problems, when the owner of that computer has money to install a discrete card, I'll tweak the clock settings a little more since I used a metal based thermal paste, then put the ram to 1600MHz and lower the latency.

Total budget is $500 but just in case Ubuntu doesn't work, $400 with windows 7/8 I don't care.

Is ATX even worth it? I mean I COULD downgrade or upgrade or whatever you call it to a ITX case cpu and mobo in 5 years.

ATX are always much better because they have more ram slots and stuff because they are bigger and have more place. Other than that usually no difference. Oh wait just please make sure the actual mobo has the 'power section' with radiators unless it's Intel because Intel on stock doesnt really need the radiators. (less power usage => less heat in power section).

Yes invest even more money in your shitty APU when you could put that towards a much better CPU+GPU that will be multiple the FPS. Good job.

Then just explain to him grabbing a CPU+GPU is a much better way to spend money and get him a system that can be upgraded and isn't shitty price-to-performance.

The performance increases between 1866/2133 memory are very minimal compared to the jump from 1600/1866, an APU with 1866Mhz memory is still the best value system put there, would cost similar to a low end CPU and motherboard by themselves while still being a good little gaming platform.

Of course a CPU and discrete card combo are going to outperform it, but will also cost you more. Plus you can always add a descrete card and OC the CPU to make it a great little system.

The only real intensive game I would play is GTA 5 and by the time that comes I can play that on low no problem. I just want something I can afford that plays games like NFS World and APB Reloaded.
