Hello everyone,

I have been gaming on my laptop (ASUS Q551LN-BBI706, most recently) for several years.  While I have been fine with the setup being at college and consistently needing a portable gaming option, I'm now ready to take the plunge into building my own desktop.  Linus's channels and PCPartPicker have certainly helped me get a very basic understanding of what I need to be looking for, but I'm worried that I may be looking at more than I truly need.  Here's just a brief summary of what I am hoping to do with this build and some of the requirements/concerns I have:

- Best settings I can get on 1080p (i.e. fully modded Bethesda games like Skyrim and Fallout 4, Bioshock Inifinite, etc.) with the possibility of upgrading to 4K once the costs of monitors finally starts dropping to a more affordable level.

- No intentions to do any sort of streaming, just playing.

- Considering overclocking, but admittedly nervous to do so as, again, I'm very new to this and would like to not waste my money ruining hardware.

- Currently do not have access to ethernet where this rig will be placed (just graduated college - it'll be a while before I'm out on my own), so wifi capability is a must.

I'll include a link to the most recent part list I made on PCPartPicker (http://pcpartpicker.com/user/tubajoe0/saved/F7g7YJ).  A few quick notes about it:

- I have not picked a monitor yet.  As mentioned earlier, I would love to have a 4K monitor, but would love to see the price go down.  At any rate, when I'm ready to build the rest of the PC, I will simply buy whatever monitor I can afford and upgrade later if necessary.

-There is also no mouse listed as I already own one, a Logitech Proteus Core.

Is what I have picked out overkill for what I want?  Should I be spending this much money or can I get away with spending less?  I'm more than open to consider different brands/products.  The parts I picked were based on the little bit of learning I have done online over the past couple of weeks.  Please let me know what you think; any ideas, concerns, or suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Here, its a more balanced build because 1. 1tb SSDs are overkill for the vast majority of people 2. ASUS Maximus boards are pretty overpriced 3. All-round better cooler 4. Smaller form factor (Its cheaper with no performance difference) 5. Better GPU, because why not

Thank you all for the quick replies!  I'm not used to forums with this much speed.

What is your budget?

That is part of why I made this thread.  I can work to save up money for a more expansive build if needed, but I do not know what constitutes as "enough money" to get what I'm looking for.

A 1080p build can be around $500, while a 4K build is $1500-$2000.

I know that there are motherboards with integrated wifi (or maybe I'm misunderstanding that, completely possible).  Is this a better route?

A couple things.  1.  Will getting a mid tower make it harder to upgrade later (say I decide to crossfire GPUs)?  2.  I had originally looked at the 390X, but became less interested in it when I learned it adds <10fps than the 390, but is almost $100 more expensive.  Is it still, in your opinion, worth it at that cost?  3. Can I get away with 8gb of ram or is 16 gb worth it?

Ok, I've taken into account a lot of your suggestions and tried to do a rebuild.  I also made a few alterations in my pick for a few products due to color (superficial I know, but I have been becoming less and less ok with having a black/red pc to go with my already owned (and loved) blue Proteus Core).

Why are you trying to push 4K on a gaming rig with a 390?

It isn't so much forcing it onto it as much as it is getting this build ready for the upgrade later down the road.  I'm much more flexible on things like the monitor, so I will more than likely end up getting the best 1080p monitor I can (unless a 4K monitor is on a ridiculous Black Friday sale) when I ultimately purchase the parts and start the build.  As of now, going 4K will take this build out of what I could ever hope to afford, so I'm trying to get as much upgraded as I can afford to purchase in the next few months.  My hope is that by spending a little extra now on some of the components, I will have to spend a lot less money to make the complete jump.

If you play demanding games (AAA), all you are going to end up doing is scaling them down to 1080p to be playable anyways.  Do you do any professional work that would be benfitted by that resolution?  1440p is a good step up for a gaming PC.

Don't forget, that 4K display is a TN panel, not an IPS.  It is inferior tech.
