Go to solution Solved by HPWebcamAble,

Didn't make the post :P Just decided to go with the 970

I ended up buying the EVGA 650W PSU and G.Skill Ripjaws 16 GB RAM, other than that its pretty similar to the last one I posted

Not sure if I should go with the i7 4790k, it adds about 0.4 GHz to the base and turbo clock but it is a bit more expensive, not sure if i need it. I won't OC the CPU or GPU

Hows the PSU? PCPartPicker claims that system will use less than 500 W. I know you need a bit more than that, but I'm not sure how much more.

Just do 4790

Ok one vote for 4790

What are you doing with this PC?

Probably should have mentioned, its going to be a gaming PC

If you won't be overclocking, use a Xeon 1231. It's a locked i7 without an iGPU.

I've heard that Xeons are better suited for servers, and i7's for gaming. And the 1231 has lower base and turbo clock than the 4790

a non Unlocked CPU and a non-oc capable mobo with a 980ti be ready for bottlenecks

Ok what would you recommend instead? I'm looking for a GPU in the power range of the 980ti. I'd also prefer NVIDIA but I don't have any good reason. If you can come up with anything that Radeon does better then I'll go for a Radeon card instead

That does save about 100 bucks but I'd like at least 16 gigs of ram. And I'm still not sold on the Xeons

I dont like the choice of psu, i dont think its of sufficient quality. Wattage is fine tho. I would get a XFX or Seasonic unit or the ever so popular G2 or GS series from EVGA.

I figured 650 would be plenty, would I be safe going down to 600 or even 550? I totally don't care about the manufacturer as long as they are reliable and decently priced

It wouldn't bottleneck on an i5-4460. Be careful with that word :P

That is true, but you really won't notice much difference. It really isn't worth it to get an i7 if you aren't going to overclock it. It's best to get this or an i5 4460.

I've currently got an i7 3770 (3.4 base , 3.9 turbo), would the 1231 or 4450 be as good or better in terms of gaming performance?

Secondary question what about video editing?

If you are video editing, the Xeon is an excellent choice. But your current processor is a very good option. You could reuse that and save a lot on your build.

I suppose I'd like more game power, rather than video rendering power.

Reusing my 3770 never really crossed my mind... I guess I was looking forward to a brand new system. But reusing it would make sense I suppose.

As long as you are fine with memory running at 1600, you should be fine with your current i7.

I've had it for 4 years (maybe more). If I did reuse it should I get a new cooler (currently using stock) or is it safe to just thoroughly clean everything and reuse?

I'd probably use the SSD I picked out, and PCPartPicker has some issues with the ram + mobo, and the case + Card. But I do like that variation of the 980ti

EDIT: Plus I'd like to keep it under 1500USD because I'm sure some things will end up being more expensive than predicted

Yes, get a new cooler. Basic coolers don't cost too much.

Wow a 1TB SSD

That is a bit ridiculous, but I would love to have one. I do already have a 2TB HDD, but my laptop's HDD just died on me, making me a little wary of HDDs.

I might switch it for a ~500 gb SSD

Other than that, its a great build, thanks!

Is money an issue? If not, here's a build I been planning to build.

I'm still in the process of drawing out the internals piping system, making sure the flow indicator is located in the middle of the side panel window.

Just a few more month before I'm ready to buy everything. If new gpu/cpu comes out before then, will use the new stuff instead.
I know there's no point in having two different piping system, it just makes things more complicated.

But it makes things looks better. The casing will be painted white, same as the ram but the ram will have led in it.
All the led in it will be custom and also would be pulsating like a heart beat

Kind of like this build here

Yes money is an issue, I'd like to keep it under $1500. Those two are just a tad over my price range ;)

Also my current setup means any fancy lighting in the case would go to waste, as my PC is almost completely hidden under my desk. No other place to put it right now.

Hopefully one day I'll save up for something like one of those! I think that my planned build will handle anything I want it to do for now :)

2 extra core, more pcie lane, better performance per dollar.

I am between gaming and rendering. I benefit more from multicore rendering.

But if i wanted to I could run a xeon instead, but that's for later down the line if i want to seriously do cgi as a full time job.
