Pentium e5200 vs q6600 ?

So my dad has a computer and wants it a little faster but doesn't want to spend much, it has 4gb of ddr2 ram so I'm looking for 8gb, and it has a pentium e5200 cpu and I was wondering if the q6600 would perform better and make things more responsive, I can get one for pretty cheap in ebay, and I can get a dual heat pipe 80mm fan tower cooler to help keep it cool if needed, I also already did a fresh install of windows 10, so I'm just asking if the q6600 would be better then the e5200 and by how much ?

Well, firstly, the Q6600 might not even be compatible with the board. 

 

In single threaded performance the Pentium is probably a tiny bit faster (although the Q6600 will be once overclocked).

 

Also, keep in mind, if he's not doing anything demanding then CPU performance isn't what affects most people (and ssd/more ram would help more).

I doubt that would do very good for such an old platform but because they are so cheap it wouldn't hurt to try a q6600. Just saying an fx 4300 is faster so that is really old architecture.

THe Q6600 would definitely be a good upgrade over the e5200

In single threaded tasks, they will be very similar. Unless you had a reason to buy a quad core for him, it probably wouldn't make that much of a difference in day-to-day usage. Depending on what he does, it is possible to likely that rather than increasing RAM, a small SSD might improve the experience a lot more.

looking at a used 120gb Intel 530 ssd atm, might be able to get it for 20$ cad or 30 if he won't come down, and he just uses it for chrome YouTube and email, but even I notice it gets sluggish trying to open stuff it takes a bit to load and iw as wondering if the quad core would help with that

In that case it'd be worth getting one. Though if they are supported one of the 45nm quad cores will be a better upgrade option (lower temperatures and power consumption plus better performance overall).

can you recommend a model that is around 30$ on ebay ? As I said very tight budget so that's why I said q6600 cause I can get one for 20$

I'll have a look, but if the budget is that limited then the q6600 might be the only option-as it is a Xeon X5450, which requires a mod-is around $50 AUD.

In that case a quad core really wouldn't be all that helpful, an SSD/more ram would be far more helpful (I'd also say use don't use chrome as it's a resource whore).

Yeah, honestly, I wouldn't do much other than get an SSD because anything else can't be reused in a new pc.

I had a Pentium E5300 and overclocked it past 3.0GHz, but I replaced it in favor of a Core 2 Duo E8400 and currently running a 4.0GHz overclock.

The quad core versions are poor overclockers and so you won't get the massive bang-for-buck if you're into tweaking.

There's gonna be no oc since it's a stock hp psu and it doesn't even have a 24pin mobo connection so stock speeds

its a stock hp model board I think it's the Asus ipbl-lb

If it's a stock HP board then what makes you think it's compatible with a C2Q? Not all LGA775 boards support C2Q CPUs.
