Upgrading to a 1151 socket motherboard, can I use my DDR3 RAM?

Ludo

Within the next month I will be upgrading from a FX 8350 to a i7 6700K, and obviously I will need a 1151 socket board for that.

I know that the 1151 boards use DDR4 RAM, but in my current budget I won't be able to get new RAM for an extra month.

So i'm wondering if I can use my sticks of DDR3 RAM for the meantime? Is this possible?

The 6700K only officially supports DDR3-L (not regular DDR3) and DDR4. DDR4 is what manufacturers put on most motherboards, very little have DDR3-L, and DDR3 isn't DDR3-L.

I'd say no. Save up a bit then buy it all at once.

I used to be quite active here.

AFAIK there are some ddr3 1151 boards but not ddr3 and ddr4 on the same board. i think the last time that happened was back in the 775 days when asus released the P5G41C-M LX.

Got an RC? head over to The Rc Thread and tell us about it, or you can just discuss rc in general there as well.

https://www.asus.com/us/Motherboards/Z170-P-D3/ It supports DDR3L AND DDR3.

DDR4 is preferred and the premium for DDR4 isn't too bad.

The motherboard does, but Intel's 6th gen processors do not officially support it.

They support it fully, but Intel i trying to ween consumers off of DDR3.
