R9 390 vs. GTX 970

Mirrosmith

How much watt does you PSU have? :D

So sometimes the R9 390 is better ( but not far away from the performance of the 970) and in some games the 970 is better and unfortunately cheaper.

In terms of apperance I would choose the R9 390- Just looks awesome   .

So I would go with a GTX 970.

Student - Budgetbuilder - trying to save as much money as possible :D    | I love clean Setups |

 PC: i5-3470. GTX660. 8GB DDR3. -> 320 USD  | Z3 -> 160USD | selfbuild Speakersystem -> 21USD

Which one of these di you guys recommend

Thankful for fast response.

I always reccomend a R9 390, the added Vram just sells it, and it performs very similar to the GTX 970 without all the bells and whistles that the Nvidia card has, but if you prefer the added options then a GTX might be better.

R9 390. The 970 and it are roughly equal at 1080p (the R9 390 just pulls ahead), but the R9 390 is far better at higher resolutions. The 8GB of VRAM is far more capacious than the 970's 4GB (or 3.5GB, depending on how you look at it). The R9 390 does use more power and emit more heat than a 970 on average, but it's really negligible and the heat output and power usage is negligible (the 390 can run on a decent 550W PSU)

TL:DR R9 390.

R9 390 - more than double the usable VRAM, about 5% faster in games and supports A-sync compute fully giving it a nice boost in DX12

I do not really think I'll need these options, at least if they don't bring any differences in overclocking

That's fine. The R9 390 will be better for you, unless you really want some NVIDIA features.

The V-ram is probably the biggest upside with the R9 390

VRAM is no joke - why do you think the 280X is so much better compared to the 2GB 770? Nvidia cards are ALWAYS memory-starved, except for the TItan cards.

AT 1080p 970..... It's a beast at 1080p. If higher, probably 390. My buddy has the 970 PNY, which is bone stock, even lower than my Zotac stock and he says he gets really good FPS in his games with the 144hz monitor. Usually always above 60 fps.

390 for any resolution IMO.

And with 2016 Vulkan / DX12 games the gap between 390 and 970 is expected to get slightly wider.
