Best CPU overclocking software?

Go to solution Solved by Litargirio,

The best software for overclocking the CPU is in it's motherboard's BIOS.

Hello all! I've recently built my best mate a budget gaming PC for his birthday, the specs include a q6600, 4gb ram, 500 gb 7200 rpm hdd, GTX 560 400 Watt power supply and a generic intel motherboard ( this all costing 205 aussie dollars ). The issue is however, the games he likes to play on his current pc ( a super terrible laptop ) are rather cpu intensive such as beam.ng drive. While the system can handle this game it does so at around 20 fps, where the bottleneck is the CPU of which runs at a base frequency of 2.44Ghz. I cannot overclock this cpu in the bios because it's an intel board but have become aware that there is cpu overclocking software available that could ultimately help boost cpu performance and therefore intensive games. So does anybody know the 'best' cpu overclocking software? I've currently tried clockgen with limited success and wanted to know if there are any alternatives and if so, are they any good?

In order for software to overclock the CPU, the motherboard and CPU both need to support it.

Moved to OSes and Software. Please post in the proper sub-forum next time.

the bios?

I have no experience with the software, as I have an AMD System, but i'd just use the intel made OC software unless someone says otherwise,

I use amd overdrive with no hassle, now GPUs are another thing. but I digress. Just tell him to use the intel oc software, if youre making his pc for him he probably doesnt know enough about overclocking himself to use a more complicated software.

Hope I helped.

What godlygamer said.

If the processor isnt unlocked, no point. if the motherboard doesnt support it, well have fun ;).

alrighty, cheers all, I know for a fact the cpu itself can be overclocked but I wasn't sure about the board. There is so little information available on software overclocking I was hopeful and decided you might not need a board that supports overclocking through the bios. Cheers for the help! c:

I can't overclock through the bios because the board doesn't support it

If the board doesn't support overclocking then you won't be able to do any overclocking. Except increasing the base clock a bit somehow, maybe.

cheers gollygamer 23, didn't realise there was a specific sub-forum :P @DominicNikon I can't overclock through the bios because the board doesn't support it

So then there is nothing you can really do.

You can try Intel Extreme Tuning Utility (https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/24075/Intel-Extreme-Tuning-Utility-Intel-XTU-), but it will only get you so far,

That is what I was hoping too do, nothing to 'extreme' considering the board isn't designed to accommodate overclocking, I would just buy a socket 775 board that supports it I just don't really want to spend any additional money if I don't have too. I have been on a forums and some people suggested BSEL mods to bring the frequency upto 3Ghz but it seems super sketchy and I doubt it'd help the longevity of the chip being done so shonky

Actually changing the frequency doesn't really affect the chip's longevity, it's increasing the voltage what does. But you won't be able to do that anyway.

What is the current frequency of that CPU?

Alright, I've done some more research and I've found a program called setfsb and have been able to successfully overclock to 2.7Ghz

I mean, you CAN overclock it using the FSB, but not the multiplier.

Is it not recommended to overclock through the FSB? ( I'm not trying to be rude at all I'm just curious )

It can screw with other things other than the CPU clock and cause problems. When you're messing with the FSB, you're not just affecting the CPU speed but also other things as well.

so how will software overclock it? it still goes though the mobo to the cpu

You can change base clock (or bus speed) on locked mobos/CPUs in BIOS. So software is able to change those settings also. Results might not be as good as with multiplier OC, but Q6600 isn't going to be much over 3.0GHz in any case. I got mine up to 2.66GHz with bad OC mobo.
