Modem to switch to router

This is probably a dumb question but I wanted to ask other people before I ran out and bought $200 of networking equipment. Will this set up work? Cable to my modem, then cat 6 to my gigabit LAN switch, then cat 6 to my apple airport extreme router. Thanks for your input.

Ive done it modem>switch>router before. And Yes dont get a airport unless you already have one.

lol yeah I know my mom bought it a few years ago before I knew anything of computers or networking. Yes I want to do it in that order because the airport doesn't support cat 6 speeds so I want the cable to run to my gigabit switch so I can have wired connections from there rather than being restricted to the cat5e speeds of the airport.

Unless you have 1000mbps speeds you wont get any help from the Cat 6 i dont think.

I have 110mbps so 10 more than cat 5e can provide so idk I want that little extra speed lol.

 Cat 6 doesn't actually have a 'speed', it has a rated maximum of 10Gb/s, but your router won't come close to saturating 1 Gb/s

No need for Cat6, Cat5 and Cat5e support Gigabit, and are much cheaper.

afaik the switch runs at the speed of the slowest connected device, so if you have one computer connected that doesn't have gigabit everything runs at 100 mbps.

Don't see a reason not to get the AirPort Extreme other than price. It is hands down the best and most problem free router I've ever worked with.

Depends on what switch you have. The good ones will only downgrade that one computers connection to 100Mb/s while keeping the rest at Gigabit.

lack of support for 40 MHz bandwidth in the 2.4 GHz band, guest network in 2.4 GHz only, no UPnP support and no WiFi Protected Setup (WPS) support. For advanced features, you won't find anything in the way of parental controls, web filtering or bandwidth management / QoS

Well for one, no WPS and no UPnP is good. They're both insecure protocols. Though the lack of advanced features is what I find detrimental to the router. Especially at it's price point.

most new routers have the ability completely shut off UPnP and WPS

personally i have it around when i need and and turn it off when i dont

WPS i a god send when i try to pair up repeaters wirelessly
