So today I asked a seller to drop my bid. Is this okay since I didn't read the description of the item clearly enough to see that there was a certain defect in the product? Or did I break ebays policy?

I don't think the seller can even do such a thing TBH.  But at least he can personally not hold it against you and just let it go when the bid ends and no one else outb you.

You can't do that. It's on you that you didn't research.

Yes, when you make a bid, you must be prepared to buy the item.
