ok, so i'm buying an r9 290 (actually, i BOUGHT one), and i know its a really good card. but i also really want to have physx capabilities which i know amd cards dont have. so i was wondering if i could buy a cheap nvidia card to use as a dedicated physx card while keeping the 290 as my main graphics driver. is that possible? please let me know.

It is not possible to be able to run both cards at once in one system utilizing both of their abilities. The day they allow SLICrossfire is the day the world ends. Now, if you find a way to be able to do SLICrossfire then go on my friend! You will make damn good money and break the internet with that dicovery. :D

Which nVidia card were you considering anyway? I'm just curious.

I said dedicated physx processor. i didnt mean like a crossfire. im not interested in combining power. and as for the nvidia card, I'm really not too sure. i thought maybe a gt 730 or something along those lines. nothing too powerful.

Still, it wouldn't be able to utilize both cards at once. Once you have the R9 290 set as the card you're going to use for Graphics the nVidia card will pretty much become useless inside the system until you decide to use it for something. I understand what you're asking it's just not possible. The idea though is a cool idea and it'd be awesome to maybe see it in the future if it's ever possible.

You used to be able to use a cheap NVIDIA card for PhysX, but NVIDIA changed the drivers so that it detects if an AMD card is present. If there is one present, it disables Advanced PhysX(GPU).

Simply can't happen. You may be able to use both cards but not both of their features combined

Would it not be possible by using old drivers? Provided the dedicated PhysX card predates the nVidia patch that disables usage alongside an AMD card, ofc.

Yes, if the card you're using goes back far enough that you can use the old drivers.
