So say I was going to buy into start citizen and I want a particular type of ship... I would be interested in something similar to the alkesh from stargate.  It was primarly a bomber but also worked as a assult/cargo ship/troop transport.. Are there any ships like that in SC...

okay first of all please make sure that you do some thorough reading on the website before you join because the game is not in a any sort of finished or close to finished state. however now is a good time to get in as the alpha universe is coming out soon so if you dont mind the bugs of an alpha good timing. if you want something that works as a bomber the retaliator is a good ship, its specifically a bomber and you can outfit it to be a drop ship too. my personal favourite the constellation is good for cargo, transport and isnt as muchof a bomber as the retaliator but it does have 48 missiles. the redeemer is a good gunship/troop transport. this are mostly large ships im speaking of though there are smaller ones but definitely not smaller ones that would fit all those roles at once. keep in mind if you look at the price of packages they arent the cost of the ship so much as a pledge to support the game. none of the packages are based on the ships monetary values, they are amounts you can donate to get the game going and they give you a ship as a thank you that you can play around with until the game is out. with 2.0 on the horizon the only ships available that are large right away (more to come soon) will be the constellation andromeda, the retaliator, and the cutlass black.

Hope that helps. if you want more info on specific ships i can provide it

Functionaly I'd say the Retaliator is the closest ATM with the Freelancer MIS probably being a smaller more affordable option (its actually about the size of an Al'kesh if you go off the Stargate Wiki but in the series they kinda scale up and down depending on what suits the shot ;)). Visually the Banu Merchantman would be the closest ATM though but has a different purpose (trading) and is a much larger ship than the other two.

Question for myself, I've been wanting to get into this game for a month or so and I'm looking at the 325a. I want something that will be a good fighter ship. Never played before but I'm willing to pledge ~80usd to this game and want to check it out while in alpha. Is there a better option and do you have anything to add about the ship I picked like what playstyle it's suited for? Thanks!

@Matt_Allensy @eHamm use this code when you check out for the first time for a bonus 5k UEC

STAR-2DHS-2TDT

@Matt_Allensy the Redeemer is also a very capable in terms of troop transport, but not quite so much as a bomber. The Retaliator, with a troop transport module and a torpedo module would also perform very capably, bu that particular module is not being sold as of now.

@eHamm, in regards to fighter ship, my personal recommendation for your approximate price range goes to the Gladius. Right now, the 325a is not commonly used and is considered a sub-par fighter by most. It will have more general uses, but the Gladius is more of a fighter ship.

Thanks! I was also looking at that, but thought it wouldn't be as versatile. My friend trying to get me to play this keeps telling me to get a 325a for escorting (?) ships or something, but he hasn't given me a ton of information and I wanted more than one person's opinion. So that said, you still think I should go with the gladius?

the 325a is a good ship if you are decent at aiming. but just speaking from personal experience the avenger is a great ship for getting into the game. all the guns on it are rapid fire so harder to miss with, its got high capacity size 3 shields, high hull health, its fast and its versatile.

@Matt_Allensy

Retaliator - has 2 modular components that can be swapped out. Cargo, bomber bays, troop deployment, and passenger comfort are the current mods. Future modules are in the works, which may include stuff like sensors or ewar, etc. Most ideal (from your request).

Redeemer - focused troop carrier that fits a bit of that style, but doesn't hold torpedoes/bombs. Probably mid-rank on the list for your request

Freelancer Mis - not a bomber, but it is a military variant of what would be a firefly-like ship. Less stringent on roles but honestly doubt it fits what you were looking for.

Vanguard - most ideal in regards to bombing and has a single modular space in the middle of the ship. It is currently only with three variations, and none of which have a primary focus on cargo, or troop carrying capacity.

Constellation (series) - a jack of all trades that may have a military variant in the future. If that occurs, it might become one worth looking; otherwise, it will be a miss as the price point is near the same as the retaliator.

Of what is available, those seem to be the ones that fit in some way.

@eHamm

Best fighter, mid-range and lower, will likely be the Gladiator v Super Hornet, Gladius v Sabre. The first two are bomber/missile and tank fighter, while the second are mini-gladiator vs space superiority fighter. After that your ranges can go higher, with the Vanguard and the Retaliator; however, those are of a different class than just being fighters. Aside from that, you still have the light fighters (karthu-al) and the vanduul fighters.

For both you and matt, I would heavily suggest buying a cheap package and using rec to test ships to see what fits best. When you do find one you like, just upgrade or melt the prior package. This way you don't submerge yourself (or your wallet) too deep.

Yes. A Gladius would perform better as an escort fighter than a 325a, in my opinion. An Avenger is essentially a bulkier, slower version of the Gladius with some cargo space.

@drewjn Thanks, didn't know I could upgrade! Does melting achieve the same result or is one more cost effective/have different benefits? What would you say a good cheap starter ship is for getting into it? And how easy is it to get enough rec to test both the 325a and the gladius?

@CommanderFett How important is cargo space?

@CommanderFett How important is cargo space?

Melting removes the original purchase (ships and packages, not items from voyager direct or UEC purchases) and does a refund in the form of store credit, so that you can use the funds on a different purchase.

Upgrading keeps the extras/insurance of the initial package or ship(edit: forgot to clarify this). So if you had an alpha (kickstarter) package, an anniversary (1 to 3 yr insurance, plus items) or an lti stand alone ship, you would keep the extra items and insurance levels upon upgrade to a new ship. LTI can only be gotten through an alpha package, or through the one time initial sales of ships. Only through upgrading of a recent lti can get you an lti version of the older ships.

So in your case, you will likely find melting far better a choice, unless you have a package and the ship you want only is sold as a stand alone. Thus, if you upgrade, you can keep that particular ship and your package.

As for cargo space, that is space in your ship that you can use to transfer and hold anything outside of the initial equipment, and yourself. So you will likely need a ship with cargo space if you want to ship something in any form of bulk. Military and heavily specialized ships will likely have all available space inside to be dedicated to equipment, ammunition, etc.
