Next thing to upgrade?

What would be the best thing to upgrade next in my sound system?

Im thinking probably subwoofer, after i build or buy rear speaker stands.

The specs:

Speakers: (4) Polk R15

Receiver: Onkyo TX-SR606

Subwoofer: Polk PSW108

And its just used at my pc.

I don't know man I'd hold off on the sub if you're going to use it with a receiver at your PC.

Generally I've been very disappointed by the general lack of LFE channel (subwoofer) support by games and Windows. It's not worth having a subwoofer connected to your system unless it's a dedicated 2.1 system with an integrated filter to send signals to the subwoofer.

Similar to yours, my receiver provides ZERO processing when using multiple channel inputs. Which means that my PC has to independently filter the low frequency crossover... and for whatever reason, on my X99 platform with on-board sound drivers installed from the manufacturer's website does not allow me to specify the crossover in Windows 10.

Even worse, I can hardly boost the bass enough to distinguish it during most games. It's absolutely maddening.

Since you aren't using a center channel, you will have to complicate your life a bit more by forcing your system to output to 5.1 and then disabling the center channel in Windows. Because, again, for whatever reason... you can't select 4.1.

Sadly, bass works the best when connected through optical. As you know, 2K games (Bioshock Infinite, Borderlands, etc.) do not support surround sound through optical.

Microsoft really needs to do a better job with surround sound support. It hasn't changed in decades. It's unfortunate LTT hardly even bothers with surround sound, thus the message rarely gets through to the big companies.

Well, at some point I'm going to get arround to fixing my HDMI board.

Well in my receiver settings I could set it to 4.1, so that worked fine.

I feel like I can hear the bass in bf4, arms 3, and dirt 3 well enough.

Microsoft needs to do a better job with audio support, period. You can't even mix stereo to mono, which is a basic accessibility feature available on other, real OSes.

That seems like a really simple feature that should be in it.

Pretty sure you can do taht on android.

Either way, the next thing I upgrade will probably be subwoofer

Interesting. I wonder what the **** I'm doing all wrong then  :) My bass is very low. Oh well. I cranked up the sub level and that seemed to work. I switch over to optical for music. It's a lot of work in my opinion. Windows 10 should have been a lot better in this regard. Zero improvement for gamers thus far since Windows 7.

Agreed! I have distinct memory that it was possible in a much older version of Windows... like 3.1 or 95 possibly? I might be crazy. It could possibly have been the software I was using at the time. (Likely Winamp)

Well for music I wont get the subwoofer in use, unless I turn on some sound mode (but that messes everything up sound wise, and only supports stereo)

So what i need to do, is fix my HDMI board. I just have to order and solder a few caps. Ill probably order them tomorow.

A simple 3$ fix. So then Ill end up with a working onkyo 7.1 receiver for a total of 18$

That would be a decent thread: a repair guide with photos

I'll make one. Unless I break it :)

Yeah, thats why im doing it. Im not very good at soldering stuff, so hopefuly this will work well.

Now, should i post the thread under audio, or guides and tutorials?

I feel like audio might be better, as its not a commen guide that regular people would care about.

I mean, there's a reason that a lot of the audio reviews get posted in Audio, instead of the review section. I know I almost never go to the review sub... I would just post it in Audio. If anyone tries to find it, they will probably end up googling it anyway, so I don't think it matters too much where you post it.

Hey! New SIgnature!

I'm supposedly a person on the Internet, but you'll never know if I'm human or not ;)

Yeah, I'll do that.

No idea when the caps will arrive, but I'll see

Haha, when you said caps, I thought you were talking about keyboard caps, and I was all like 'wait... I thought this was audio' then it dawned on me [emoji14]

Yeah, capacitors.

Speaking of keyboards, I still need a new keyboard, but now I have no money as I spent it on an ultrawide monitor

Yeah

I mean I don't really need a keyboard, I have a spare IBM model m and a Compaq MX brown board, but I still use my dying apple adjustable keyboard.

Maybe the next thing you should do is get a new keyboard instead of anything audio related.

Mabey.

I asked for a keyboard for Christmas, so I'll see how that turns out, but its not that likely my parents will get me a 200$ keyboard.

Though I just found I still have a Lego set I can sell for 150$
