I'm planning on building a new gaming pc and I don't know what CPU and motherboard to buy. I was thinking getting an i5 4690k and a z97 since i5 are more than enough for gaming but, since new motherboards are not compatible with 4gen CPU's and I want to do some future proofing, I was planning on getting an i5 6500 (really budget CPU) and a z170, don't know which model yet.

Is the i5 6500 any good for gaming (aaa games)? Should I get an i5 6600k or should I invest on the 4gen cpu and motherboard?

6500 + H170 or 6600k with Z170, no point getting a locked CPU with a board meant for overclocking :P

basicly this, unless you're planning now to buy a K part later (which is honestly... not the right choice if you have no "second use" for the non-k part)

but on the topic of future proofing:

no single part is "futureproof"

futureproofing is a concept of picking parts that allow for changes in the future you did not think of today.

example: i dont want SLI, but i got an SLI enabled board, in case i wanted to go gpu-crazy before i got a platform upgrade.
