IBM model M odd end/port?

Go to solution Solved by Volbet,

Here is a guide on how to convert it to USB/PS/2. http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=17458.0

It takes a lot of work, but it can be done.

Ok so I bought an IBM Model M on eBay and it seems to have come from a Terminal Board I think as the cable seems to be an Ethernet cable! and the port that would usually have a SDL output to put a SDL to PS/2 cable isn't there it just comes out like a cable on let's say a 'generic' keyboard. Not like the IBM model M?! I would love to get this keyboard working through PS/2 or USB or something and I can't find an adapter, will I have to mod it to make it work?

Oh and a couple pics...

Sorry about the bad quality!

Seems like you bought a terminal IBM Model M. Those connectors are notoriously hard to convert them into a standard PC connector (PS/2/USB).

darn it, do you think this would do the trick without having to use the VGA and mouse cable and stuff.,...

Will that make it so I don't have to mod it?

Problem is that it's not a ethernet cable per say. I don't know if the pins are the same. For ten pounds I would say it's worth the try.

one final question if I just solder the corresponding wires from teminal to ps/2 without teensey will it just work as a ps/2 cable?! like soldering data to data etc...

I am not sure what "teensay" means. You will most like likely need to combine some wires and other will run straght through. This is why diagrams are of importans. But if done correctly it will work just like a PS/2 port.

Sorry Teensy

But OK thanks, I just thought that the walkthrough needed teensy... it's in there somewhere! ( http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=17458.0

You will need Teensy if you do a USB mod. Every PS/2 mod I have done didn't need it

You can also read through this. It goes a bit more to the point of converting it to PS/2 insted of discussing the general concepts and converting to USB in the end

you need to mod it.

I believe it uses keyset 3. keyset 2 is the standard now.

from what I read, you can get some keys to work by terminating it to ps/2 but I had no luck doing that to my 122 key model M.

Will work for electronic components and parts
