Windows VS linux server?

[solved] i did go for windows, but we will see if i moving over to linux.

I have my old computer standing here and i'm thinking about building a server of it. so i wounder what is the "best" os for a hobby server.

what i'm going to use it for is: file sharing, game servers and maybe a homepage in the future.

if you guys would give me some tips and tricks for both linux and windows, that would be great.

pc specs:

amd phenom ii 1050t

4gb 1330 ddr3

120GB ssd

4* 3TB red hdd (raid 5)

amd 4670

I say linux every time, Its free, easy to use (as in you can install pretty much anything you will need via a single install command) Its extremely stable, no need for a bloated GUI on top, can be run lights out and completely controllable via SSH. I would never even consider windows server myself

Arch Linux on Samsung 840 EVO 120GB: Startup finished in 1.334s (kernel) + 224ms (userspace) = 1.559s | U mad windoze..?

And we can have a whole slew of people touting the benefits of a Microsoft server over Linux. :) Honestly, each are good options and can get the job done. What are you most comfortable with? Go with that...

Depends, how comfortable are you with Linux? Is everything you want compatible with Linux? - mainly games. Windows uses notably more resources to just run itself than using Linux. Just a bit of food for thought..
