Alright so I have an additional SSD which I originally got for my previous laptop but now I want to use in my desktop since I have a new laptop that came with a SSD.

So basically my question is whether or not I should setup my current desktop SSD ( http://www.adata.com/en/ssd/specification/169 256GB version) and laptop SSD ( http://www.anandtech.com/show/6935/seagate-600-ssd-review 240GB version) in raid 0. What would the performance increase be?

And if so what backup solutions would you recommend? I have a freenas server that I can push the backups to. Also coping my current W7 os which is installed on my desktop SSD over to the raid array would be a requirement. Which I can probably do with tools like AOMEI Partition Assistant or some other cloning program. Of course I'd probably have to copy my os to a different HDD first right?

Hopefully I listed everything that you guys would need to advise me on whether or not to setup raid0 with similar sized but different SSDs.

you'll get double the performance of the slowest drive :)

I'm not sure how it affects randoms though. Can anyone tell me?

The memory on an SSD already runs in Raid 0 so 2x 250GB SSD's in RAID 0 are almost the same as just buying a 500GB SSD just with the extra controller that could die.
I see no issues with it provided you trust the SSD's you have and they have not done anything weird in your time using them.

Your performance will peak to 2x your slowest SSD performance but will vary from application, over all you should see launching and read speeds increase.
Depending on your motherboard RAID controller you may hit performance limits there.

As for backups i never really keep anything of importance on my main HDD so if my OS ever crashes I can just format and away I go again.
I would use the freeNAS to store most if not all my data that I did not really need locally on my machine and just map  network drive from the freeNAS
I would keep programs and game installs on my PC though.
Also you should keep an of site backup, I use my parents house and leave portable HDD's there haha

Alright, it sounds like I'd get an overall performance boost which is nice although I'm not too happy about my Adata SSD basically being underutilized. Either way I think I'll try to set this up. Just need a bit of time for it which I guess will be in about 2 weeks during reading week.

Of course if someone thinks I shouldn't do this let me know before I get to a point where returning will be very difficult.

Also curious how randoms will get affected so let me know if you know something about that.
