hi,

 

i recently got 50 mbps fiber internet.

but when i download stuff on my pc.

For example: via steam or origin.

but i only get 4 mbs max.

is there any fix?

Run a test on http://speedtest.net and post your results back here.

 

It could be one of many factors but it could be something like the 50mbps being an 'up to' speed and you might not be achieving much of that. It could also be that they're throttling you or something else on your network is throttling you. It could also be that your or other machines are using a lot of bandwidth for things that you're not aware of.

In addition to all of Tedster's suggestions, it could be wireless congestion, if you're connected wirelessly.

Download: 47.69 mbps

Upload: 56.42 mbps

ping: 1 ms

We've confirmed that you do indeed have a pretty awesome connection. Which ISP are you with?

Throttling seems more likely but when you were getting these poor speeds were you on a different machine/in a different physical place?  Are you using wired or wireless or powerline networking to connect this machine to the router?

In addition to all of Tedster's suggestions, it could be wireless congestion, if you're connected wirelessly.

Definitely could be the issue.

I don't see why you'd be getting such a bad speed on these sites then. Is it consistent?

If so, try using a VPN and see if that helps with the speeds. Just make sure that the VPN isn't congested or anything.

Lastly, there is a very big difference between 50MBps and 50Mbps. Megabyte vs Megabit. That really gets most people, in my experience. I pay for a 50Mb down and 10Mb up connection. 3-6MB/s via Steam downloads is very normal.

my friend has a 40 mpbs internet connection.

and he gets 10 mbps in steam and origin.

50Mbps = 6.26MBps

When downloading in Steam, its shows in Megabytes/second
Your internet provider advertises in Megabits/second.

You are fine. You are confusing bits and bytes. Remember there is 8 bits in a byte. So if it has a small b then it is bits and a large B is bytes. 4X8=32 so it is a bit low.
