390,390x, Fury will be the best price/performance in that area. Unless you need some Nvidia features, you have a low-wattage PSU,  your a die-hard fanboy.etc AMD is better in that area.

Hello guys, I'm thinking of buying a new video card but I'm having a hard time choosing between the 970 and the 980. Feedbacks on both of the cards would be great.

Welcome to the forums.

1. What is your budget?

2. What is your current monitor?

3. Do you currently have, or are you planning to get a G-Sync monitor within the next 3 months?

4. What resolution do you plan on gaming at?

5. What is your target FPS?

Because the question really depends. You shouldn't be comparing the 970 with the 980. You first need to narrow down whether you need/want one class of performance vs the higher class of performance. Then, you need to decide between a 970 vs a 390, and a 980 vs a 390x.

If you want a real answer you should do two things.

1) You may want to use an account that makes people feel they aren't wasting words on an anonymous number that won't ever see the responses to the post

2) Provide information like...

When is the next time you are going to buy a PC or upgrade?

Are you set on NV over AMD?

What screen resolution are you going to play with @ what Hz?

What games do you play/want to play over the next 1-2 years?

What is the make/model of CPU in your system?

1. My budget is between 400-450 USD

2. I'm currently using a TV as a monitor which has a resolution of 1360x768

3. No, I'm not planning of getting a G-sync monitor

4. I'm planning of gaming atleast on a 1080p resolution

5. I'm aiming at between 40-60 FPS

Well, If your budget is $400-450 USD (Assuming you're buying in the US), that's GTX 980 territory.

Most GTX 980's start around $450 (Not counting crazy sales). You can save $50, and get identical (on average) performance @ 1080p by getting an R9 390x. Plus it has double (8GB vs 4GB) the VRAM, which will help if you decide to upgrade to 1440p or 4K.

ASUS 390x STRIX 8GB - $409.99 USD

MSI GTX 980 Gaming 4GB - $479.99 USD

So, the 390x really seems to be the better deal right now. But of course, ultimately the decision is yours, and you can see if there is other value beyond raw performance that might matter to you.

Anyone else have any other input?

If that TV is at about 720p, then either card is gonna kill almost every game, not factoring in things like DSR. Unless I missed that you actually have a 1080p display, which in that case, get an R9 390(X), which will do wonderfully at 1080p

From the sounds of it, he's planning on upgrading to a 1080p display in the future (Hence #4).

But you're right, at 720p, pretty much any $200+ GPU would kill it at max settings, etc.
