Effin Steam.
So I am downloading TF2 this past week. Yesterday when I went to sleep it was at 90%. Great. A few more then I can finally play.
5 effin minutes ago, as I got home, I turned my PC on, browsed reddit, then opened steam. Nothing happened. I double clicked the icon on the desktop. Still nothing.
I restarted my PC, then clicked steam. Then... then... my download was back to 0% ! Argh!
Anyone has an idea what the hell happened ? What can I do ?
This is the method I used to salvage my Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain download. This won't necessarily put you back to where you were but it can help to prevent redownloading the entire thing from scratch. I also believe it's best to do this as early as possible to prevent too many overwritten files which may balloon the salvaged download. So, yea my download restarted for the fucking 4th time but I was able to recover most of it. (Note: Making up 40GB space is a total bitch, unless you have great space then it is all fine)
- I keep forgetting this method and I was replacing the files at wrong place. So, I decided to make a Doc about this for greater good. The only tricky thing about this method is to find the exact same name of the steam's game folder for e.g MGSV's steam game folder is called "MGS_TPP". Create a new folder and put the exact name, if you don't know the name of your steam's game folder. Google it, you are bound to finder your answer on some steam forum.
- Go to your steamapps folder and locate the appid in your download folder, back up the folder of the game you wish to salvage to another drive.
- Copy all the files in this folder to the game folder in your common folder inside the steamapps directory. If a folder has not been created for the game yet you will need to make one and hope or find out the correct name for the folder. In this case it was MGS_TPP.
- Delete the appid folder for the game as well as it's corresponding state.patch file inside the downloading folder. You'll also need to delete the corresponding appmanifest.acf file for that appid to prevent it from appearing in the download tab on Steam and continue to redownload. In my case I deleted everything in the downloading folder and all of my appmanifest files.
- Now attempt to re-install the game. Before starting the download it will discover the existing files and download only what it still needs. Now this might not put you back to where you were before, but it still way better than download the whole game. For me, my download began from 10.4GB that is why it's best to do this as early as possible to prevent too many overwritten files.
