what would be my approximate read and write speed of a raid array with 2 80gb hard drives. would it be worth doing if thats all i have?

never mid i just found a 500gb seagate barracuda in my closet

Having two drives in RAID0 does give you a good speed boost. You can have a basic idea of the speed that you will be getting by multiplying the speed of the slowest drive by the number of the drives and then multiply the result by 0.85 (roughly) and you should get a good estimate of what you will be seeing as performance. If you don't mind the higher risk of data loss it can be a good improvement especially for older drives. :)
