Impressed by the 390x

FruitBasketSilex

Gotta say, I'm impressed by the 390x. I have the MSI Gaming version, and playing Far Cry 4 maxed out at 1080p, it rarely goes over 50c. Not to mention, it plays everything I throw at it with 60fps smoothly, even the Witcher 3.

Good job, AMD!

I mean, couldn't this have been a status update?

Anyways, glad you like your card.

Meh, probably.

I was mostly concerned with the fact that the 390x is hot, but not getting over 50 is not hot.

Yeah they don't have the same cooling problems they used to so they don't really run hot.  That said, that doesn't mean they don't output a lot of heat though :)

yeah damn. It might have been because I lowered my expectations when everyone and their mother said it was a rebrand, but when I saw the benchmarks... damn its fast

My 780ti is getting a bit dated now, but even with the OC on it, it barely keeps up with the numbers I have seen from the 390x...

I have a hard time believing that it's not getting over 50C, I'm not doubting MSI's cooling solution but those are some custom watercooling temps right there. Anyways, glad you like your card!

Swapped my GTX 970 to an R9 290X which overclocks to 1150 core / 1450 memory with +40mV on voltage, that's also around a 390X performance, I'm impressed as well cause I get more FPS than before, sometimes even up to 15 more. (Tomb Raider for example), It's an MSI version, the older design one, but it doesn't really go beyond 80-85 degrees so it's fine.

The MSI 390x seems to be one of the best 390xs. (Don't shoot me if I got that wrong, mobo cpu mem area is more my forte)

Have to ask what settings you're running with Witcher, because I've been strictly informed nothing will run Witcher at ultra with hairworks on other than a 908ti or a Titan.

If anyone asks you never saw me.

I was running it with anything I could fine set to the top, but i can't seem to get it to do it again. :( I switched drivers because I was getting BSODs and temps in the 80s, so I think the other driver was automatically overclocking the card. I'm not the best with GPUs, but that's what it seemed like. I'm on the beta driver, and Witcher doesn't want to push beyond 30-40 frames with everything maxed.

sure, msi did a great job on the 300series. but it's not the best. if you want to go to the bleeding edge of what a r9 390x can offer then you gotta go with a asus strix. it's 3 fans paired with the ultra huge radiator provide better oc-ability then any other radeon before i'd say.

Also, I wouldn't use hairworks if I was you... especially on a non-nvidia card (if that's even possible).  It will be a huge load and not really make that much difference in how it looks imo

Yeah, I just turned it on to see the difference, and forgot it was on. I turned it off when I jumped in game a few minutes ago.

Well, the BSODs and heat cleared up, at the cost of less frames in Witcher. I mostly play Shadow of Mordor and FC4 anyways. I'm finding it hard to get into the Witcher.

Neh I wouldn't say that. It's lacking vram cooling when everyone else has it :/

It wouldn't be the first time asus had problems with the vram cooling. I remember they had to revise the 7970 so it would have it because it kept overheating lol
