Edge extentions support delayed until 2016

It was rumored that extension support for Edge web browser would be delayed as the latest Insider build of Windows 10 (Build 10565. Official build of Windows 10 is: 10240), doesn't have it, mixed with the fact that Windows 10 big update is expected to be coming out soon (November 2nd) officially.

This update is like a Service Pack of Windows 10. It include a great number of improvements and bug fixes, including its built-in apps and Edge web browser. Sadly, no extension support.

Now Microsoft confirms the speculations, by saying that extension support for edge web browser will be delayed, and is expected to be released in 2016.

Microsoft says:

We’re committed to providing customers with a personalized web experience, which is why bringing extensions to Microsoft Edge continues to be a high priority. We’re actively working to develop a secure extension model to make the safest and most reliable browser for our customers, and look forward to sharing more in a future Windows 10 update in 2016

Extension support system in Edge is supposed to support most Chrome and Firefox extension (of course web browser UI tweaks extensions won't be supported as the web browser is different) with little to no modification for extensions developers, bringing great news to users in getting their favorite extension pretty fast, and full featured.

We don't know yet, when in 2016 it will be released, but it is speculated to be in with Redstone update of Windows 10 (or if you prefer: Windows 10.1 (nothing official in naming))

I really wonder if the delay for the extension is really due that Microsoft wanted to focus on the engine first. Whether be security issues fixing, bugs, or features support. Like Microsoft knows that most will jump and try Edge once extension arrives, and want to have the engine part solid and support the most we technologies to give a good first impression.

The reason why I am saying this, is that since the company changed, I see Microsoft putting a lot more effort and a lot more care on its software (despite Windows 10 being a bit rushed released).

I guess time will tell.

Edges uses it's new engine: EdgeHTML which started as a mass clean up, and removal of legacy code of Trident, and uses Chakra JavaScript engine (by Microsoft)

pretty much a complete rewrite of internet explorer?

Pretty much, yeah :)

Extension support system in Edge is supposed to support most Chrome and Firefox extension

Without that, the only people that would move to Edge would be those that were using Internet Explorer (or website developers that need to make sure their site works).

Yea. With complete web standard support, and drop of all Microsoft proprietor web technologies (so companies with systems that works only with IE, needs to use IE11, Edge won't work for them. And that is why IE is still included in Windows 10). Also, plug-in support has been dropped in Edge in favor of security. Flash is the only plugin included, and like Chrome updated automatically by the web browser (Well Windows Update in the case of Edge).

The web browser is massively faster compared before (IE11). This is because of proper implementation of web standards and Microsoft now really focusing on optimization. So, the web browser is so much faster, that it is now in the ball park of Firefox and Chrome performance, depending on what you are looking at. So now, it is a web browser that you can consider, and people are excited because it builds competition, and the lack of since many years has really slow down Firefox and Chrome development. Most people wait for extension support in Edge, before giving Edge a real try. The market share surge of Edge (once people switch, which should be soon after extension support arrives) should revive, like the old days, the web browser development speed of the big 3. So expect goodness from Chrome, Firefox and Edge as time goes on.

Because a web browser takes a very long time to do. Recall Firefox 0.x days (and that was without extensions days, and far simpler web pages to process)

Not quite. The layout engine is a fork Trident (used in IE) with a bunch of legacy code removed, and a bunch of improvements. The JS engine (Chakra) is a fork of their JScript engine (used in IE) with a bunch of improvements.

It would be more accurate to say Edge is a fork of Internet Explorer, rather than a rewrite.

With complete web standard support

Define "complete web standard support", because right now no browser supports all web standards. In terms of how many % of web standards are supported Edge is still quite a bit behind other browsers such as Firefox and Chrome. For example on the HTML5Test website Ege 12 scores 397/555 while Chrome 46 scores 521/555. CanIuse shows a similar story.

Edge is quite a bit ahead of IE 11 though.
