My friend needs a new GPU to replace his GTX 745

Well my best friend is more into the gaming side of "The Race" than components side. He made the mistake of buying an HP Phoenix prebuilt for $1500 which had a 4770, and a, get this...GTX 745. He has now realized what a bad move he made. It runs games worse than my i3 and 270x which I bought for around $500. He needs a new GPU, and was gonna get a 960. Thats his price range, around $200 maybe $250 for everything. I was telling him that maybe a 280x or a 380 would be a better choice, but thinks that AMD cards wont work with his OEM motherboard (which might well be true). I might just take my card to his house and plug it in and see what happens. So he is gonna need a new GPU, and PSU because Im not gonna let him use the one that came with the prebuilt. Was the 960 a good choice, or should he go with AMD?
