You can get a key for like $30. Not expensive at all.

Buy a windows 10 key...

Windows 10 is locked to your motherboard and CPU just like past versions of windows.

If I decided to get new MOBO+CPU I can't reuse my old HDD with legal Windows on it?

Thanks Obama.

Just rebuilt your old PC and deactivate the key, then activate with the same key on new PC.

My account is almost entirely dormant. Hope you all are having a grand time. Many years of fun were had here.

Can you tell us which parts you replaced?

If you replaced the CPU + Motherboard, then activating Windows will be a bit trickier.

How did you get Windows 10 to begin with? Did you take advantage of the Free Upgrade from Windows 7 or 8.1?

If so, after you upgraded, did you use a program to recover the converted Windows 10 Key?

FYI, an upcoming build of Windows 10 will allow activation using your Windows 7/8.1 key, when doing a fresh install.

At the moment though, you either need to recover the converted Windows 10 key, or you need to first install Windows 7/8.1, then perform the upgrade.

Nope. You have to reinstall.

That's not strictly true. It depends on what his old CPU + MOBO was. If they were both modern Intel chips, then often, you can plop the old HDD in, and it'll boot (Then upgrade all drivers).

But of course, it's ALWAYS MUCH MUCH BETTER to just reinstall Windows when swapping out the CPU + MOBO.

How? Where does it get the key? With an OEM Laptop or Desktop, with an embedded Product Key in the bios, then sure, I can see that working.

But with a System Builder or Retail key? Can you provide a source for this?

When a key isn't specified by the user, it automatically applies the generic key. This key will activate only on PCs which have done the upgrade.

Well I bought a pre-built PC so I don't have the key (I later bought a upgrade to WIn 7 Pro)
