installers?

Do I need the installers for programs after they've been installed for them to run properly? The installer for Matlab on my PC is almost 1 Gb and I need that space elsewhere... would it be safe to delete it?

No, after the installer is done, you can delete it.

Its like a box for a machine, once you have taken the machine out you can throw away the box

You can also think installer like .zip. It contains all files that software needs as well as instructions on where and how to setup them. Software are generally much larger than installer files.
