I plan on getting one in the near future, I don't game so the onboard is fine for now. multi-tasking, VMware or VirtualBox, movie ripping, photoshop and normal pc use.

I doubt he'd need an I7, $300+ cpu. This cpu is at the same price point as the one he chose, and is skylake.

For storage I went with a smaller ssd (with windows 10 installed he should still have around 80-90gb left).

He said he isn't into gaming, but I advice having a graphics card still, especially since onboard graphics sucks balls on average.

As for power supply I went with an Xfx one since of my knowledge xfx is better with psus

What's wrong with the parts I chose?

which is a better board?

ASRock Z97M Pro4 or ASRock H97M Pro4 or should I get the ASRock H97 Pro4?

Go with skylake not haswell. Skylake supports more features and is a tad faster.
