pretty much any <5 ms 1080 p will be better than what you have

dont get hung up on what they call "gaming" monitors on your budget

GPU then monitor.

Good point, I almost think monitor first and then a GPU, a GTX 960 G1 Windforce is like 200 on Amazon. Some kind of 1080p 144mhz like an Asus VG248QE would be a good contender.

got any recommendations for a gpu and monitor

R9 380 would be good, or an R9 290 if you can find one for that price.

For the monitor i would save up and get something nice, it's not worth buying cheaper monitors.

who cares...

This^ So much of this. When I went shopping for my monitor every single monitor under 200usd that had the tag "gaming" had hordes of upset owners. I got a 25" monitor with a response time of 5ms and a ISP screen for 160us, not a single COD sticker on the box. Best god damn monitor I have ever had.

Don't overlook a 290, they're cheap as chips because of the 300's coming out and when given a slight overclock perform the same or even better. You do lose out on some Vram but the chances of that being a factor in the next few years is slim.

If anyone asks you never saw me.
