500W is enough but that PSU is probably really bad

theoretically yes but cheapo PSUs can only output 50% of the rated which is not enough

I'm pretty sure cheapo power supplies can output less than that.

50% on average:

they're somewhere between "can output rated capacity" and "will explode if you plug in an LED"

When I had my 1 GTX 960 and an i3 along with a bunch of other stuff my system drew less than 200W from the wall, if that PSU is only capable of 50% output then you should be fine however it is recommended that you upgrade the power supply to really anything else. Antec, Corsair, and EVGA all make good budget PSU's.

There's more to power supplies than just wattage. Voltage regulation and build quality are also very important.

I understand that but so long as the PSU is properly cooled and it's max output is being reached then it should be fine for now. Then the OP can save up and get a better PSU in a few weeks / months.

OP Check out this if you're looking on getting a better PSU: Ebay

If the unit is going outside of tolerances or very close to doing it at the required loads, I wouldn't even use it at all.

Even if this unit is capable of safely outputting 50-75% of its rated capacity of 500 watts then it would be capable of somewhere around 250-375 watts which would be more than enough for this system and so long as it's cooled properly it shouldn't have an issue (in the short term).

If OP wants the 960 then he can get it and it should run with his current PSU however I would just like the rest of you recommend upgrading the PSU, however if it's for short term use and OP can get a new powersupply relatively quickly than it should be fine.

What about temperature tolerance? Don't forget why the CX are bad.

It can also depend on the unit. The CX850M can survive the hot box. http://www.jonnyguru.com/modules.php?name=NDReviews&op=Story4&reid=427

The CX are not bad, they are just not high quality (and yes there are better options in the same price bracket). The PSU that OP's friend has is bad. Also like I said, as long as the PSU is cooled properly than it should be fine in the short term. Do you read half of what I write and then respond?

Not only that but from personal experience here are four stories I have-

  • Older Brother- i7-4790k & GTX 980ti AMP! Extreme + 6 HDD's on a CX750M
  • Younger Brother- G3258 & GTX 750ti + 2 HDD's on a CX500
  • Friend- FX-4300 & 2x R9 270x's + 2 HDD's on a CX750M
  • Me- i3-4150 & GTX 960 + 1 SSD & 1 HDD on a CX500M

The CX series of PSU's work perfectly fine from my experience- it's when people use them improperly that they fail.

They are good PSU's they are not great PSU's. OP's PSU is bad. I think you're just assuming everything is either a really good product or a really bad one and that there is no in between.

I'm just saying you're the exception and no the rule. CX are not for gaming - they are bad for gaming. They're decent for offices.

TONS of people have had great experiences with CX PSU's and just like people you only ever hear the bad things about them. They are perfectly capable for gaming, and they're perfectly good for offices. You're just a Corsair hater apparently- even the Johnny Guru reviews say that while they're not great PSU's they're good and all the CX PSU's have received pretty decent scores in the 6-8 range.
