ASUS or MSI GTX 960?

sanderlawrence

I was wondering which card is better and will last longer and has much more better OC potential. The Asus one has a backplate and it is more expensive than the MSI one but I kinda like the design on the MSI because of the cooler IMO.

For aesthetics the Strix has a backplate, but the cooler doesn't really appeal to me with the Owl eyes..

The MSi will have better cooling.

About overclocking potential, depending on the chip that you get (silicone lottery), but in most cases the MSi one will perform better.

OC potential is very much down to silicon lottery. For mid range card, MSI is better.

Unless you must have Nvidia features or the lower power consumption of the 960. I'd get the R9 380 instead. Better performance for the same money.

I have got an Asus GTX960 Strix 2GB and take it from me, its a pretty good performer and it runs really cool. And yes, the backplate is a welcome addition.  So, I would suggest the 960 Strix by ASUS.

How about a Sapphire R9 285 or 380?

Just get a 285 or 380, they outperform a 960 by lots and are the same price!

I knew someone was gonna say this but the AMD products here are kinda expensive more than Nvidia because AMD has low demand here where I live. Most people here buy Nvidia products.

So what are the prices of the 960, 280, 285 & 380?

Also I wouldn't get a 4GB 960 if you are getting a 960

Well that sucks. I would go for MSI then.

Well, the 280 costs 342 dollars, there are no 285's here, the 960 costs 219 dollars and the 380 costs, 230 dollars.

I would get the 380, it is worth the extra $11

960 has better overclocking than 380, and doesnt require you to have a monster cpu to not stutter
if you dont plan on overlocking, and you have like a recent i5/i7 you can go amd for better performance in most titles

I'll take the 380 with that pricing. Already 10% faster than the 960 out of the box.

a OCed 960 can barely match a stock 380 - Digital Foundry did a test and the OCed 960 was beating a stock 380 just barely. Once you OC the 380 it pulls way ahead.

I'd say get a MSI or Sapphire 380.
