Mic Help...

My mic doesn't work. I have a pair of Skull Candy earbuds with a built in mic. When i plug them in to the computer, i cannot use the mic. My case (Corsair Air 240) has a headphone port and a separate mic port. If I purchased a headset with a mic and plugged it in to the headphone port, would that work? Is it just my earbuds or do i need my mic and headphones to be separate?
