So it's been in the back of my mind on how true that really is.

 

If its true, what would happen if I paired a Athlon X4 760K + R9 390/Crossfire and tried to play some games in 4K?

 

Would there be a bottleneck due to the cpu or the gpu's or both?

 

**No I don't own a 760K Or R9 390 but this is something I was just thinking about**

It's still gonna be as cpu bound but it's gonna be extremely GPU bound so it gets extremely unbalanced

The 760k won't be able to push the 390 to it's full potential so there would be some major bottlenecks there.

^This. Also the gap in performance between different CPUs does narrow quite a bit though when comparing to 1080p.

The 390 X-fire would probably be bottlenecked by the Athlon.

You still need a decent CPU.

well.. i actually have done some testing on cpu VS gpu bounding.

in minecraft :D

 

with a GTX970 no matter what cpu you have, it's gonna neck the cpu.

with a GT610 minecraft will neck on your GPU (hilareous, i know xD) so you can make do with a slower CPU.

 

now, what does this have to do with the topic at hand?

 

resolution mostly only changes GPU usage, so going towards higher resolutions, your GPU will be loaded much more. -> lower max FPS

if this is to a point where you dont have much cpu usage anymore, you could make do with a lower end CPU just fine.

 

that said, if you're spending cash on a 4K display, you should look into swapping out that athlon xD

one thing tho: more gpu intensive -> lower fps -> lower cpu usage. (depending on the game, i know.)

This is really close to the full explanation. Basically, the cpu has two jobs, running the logic (physics and other stuff) and draw calls.

Draw calls are basically the cpu giving the gpu instructions on what to render. At higher resolutions, the gpu has to work harder so there's fewer draw calls. This part of the cpu's job gets less intensive.

The thing is, a cheap cpu like the 760k can't keep up with a lot of draw calls. So let's say you were bottlenecking your gpu in a game and getting 40 fps at 1080p and you change the resolution to 1440p, you will still bottleneck the gpu if it is capable of 60 fps at 1440p. So you'd still get 40 fps, but the bottleneck would be smaller.

So it's absolutely true that games get less cpu bound as you increase resolution, but the only thing that gets less intensive is the draw calls. The logic processes are still the same regardless of resolution

The way I think about it is cpu is responsible for ur max fps,

When ur gpu bound the gpu is the limiting factor to ur max fps, lower setting fps goes up

When ur cpu bound say 40 fps no matter what u do with you setting u still only get 40 fps

So if ur cpu bound and u up ur resolution u do t get a fps hit
