i5 2500k

Go to solution Solved by Notree,

Okay first off let me place my current specs:

CPU: intel duo quad core q9550

GPU: MSI Geforce 960

RAM: 16gb ripjaw

motherboard: Gigabyte something.

Question:

I found a i5 2500k and a motherboard that supports it. They are both free. SO now my question is. If i were to throw my GPU and Everything else from my old unit onto this new i5, Will I notice a performance difference? Keep in mind, this motherboard and CPU are free.

THank you,

stepping up from a dual core to a quad core yes definitely, That cpu isn't bad either so it will pair nicely with your GPU.

I have a 2500k. You will be very pleased with it. 4.9Ghz was a breeze and so far has never let me down. Had it for around 4 years and should last at least another 3-5 years.

It's not a race to the bottom.

Is it easy to over clock? I have it on an air cooler. Should I invest in a like corsair water cooler?

I'm not sure about air. I've had mine on water since I got it as I knew I would overclock.

It's very easy.

Go up in multipliers, raise your volts and you're done. 4.7Ghz was easy to reach that way and only used 1.34V. After that point it becomes a bit more difficult and risky.

It's not a race to the bottom.

Still using a 2500k with no hiccups besides trying something silly like hosting heavily modded minecraft and playing on the same machine. For a chip that has been around since 2011, it still noogies current AMD chips.

Thank you very much for your help. I will give it a shot today and see how it goes.
