Hey guys, I'm very aware that there's not really much space for a laptop to do an upgrade but I am also aware that I can replace the CPU for my HP Elitebook 8560w, I just wanted to know what is the strongest CPU that it can support. Although I cannot provide you what the name of the motherboard is. The current CPU for the laptop is an Intel Core i7-2820QM.

well you already have a quad core laptop, so you probably have the best your system could support unless you updated to a new generation on the same socket (Ivy bridge might work) but BIOS compatibility could be problematic and the performance gain wouldn't be that huge

The i7-2960XM is likely it. I don't know if your machine will take Ivy Bridge chips even though the socket supports it; it might be a BIOS limitation. If you can take ivy bridge, then the i7-3940XM is the best CPU.

Wait you can buy Laptop CPU's?

Not anymore. They're all soldered now as of about a year and 3 months ago.

I know that with the MSI GT 80 you can buy upgrade kits , but that is a very specific case, i ddo not believe you can for this laptop :P

You cannot upgrade the CPU in the GT80 because it's soldered, TDP-locked bullshit. But you could in most previous machines.

I have finally moved to a desktop. Also my guides are outdated as hell.

Ah, I see. Thanks for everyone's replies. 'Cause I know even though the manufacturer states a specific line of CPUs that can be used on the laptop, sometimes there are other CPUs that you can use and it was interesting for me to find out what other available CPUs I can try. I would definitely try to look into this although it would cost a bit of a luxury. Just for the satisfaction of tinkering around the laptop.

Oh yeah, i think its the GPU's you can upgrade later on. but i know for a fact that MSI will sell upgrade kits for the GT 80

Yes, this is correct.
