Hey guys,

 

I have been really worried about overclocking my card AT ALL because I may keep this PC for the next 6+ years and I don't want to damage or wear out my 980TI prematurely. At the same time I feel I am leaving free performance behind by not overclocking at least a little bit.

 

If I do an overclock without upping the voltage will it still wear out the card quicker?

 

Would this be safe or am I putting excess wear on my card?

 

Core Clock: +100 (1450ish MHz)
Memory Clock: +400 to +500 (4000ish MHz)
Power: +109​

 

Is there something more conservative you guys would recommend or should I just leave the card alone and not OC at all?

I don't OC anything cause of wear and tear, heat and noise. your call.

You probably won't get that high at all on the memory overclock. I assume your gpu has Hynix memory which is garbage for overclocking.

Also usually you wanna overclock without adding volts.

I wonder if that's true.

I would totally test that if I had a test bench, cause I have a GTX 980 with Samsung memory and one with Hynix memory.

Do you have a source for that?

You can do that without any problems. Just make sure your temperatures stay at a reasonable number.

Yeah, but is it stable in games?

I know someone with a 980ti with Hynix they can run +550 no issues. When they go in-game it crashes wishing 10-20 minutes.

Ahh...I mean I played CS GO on it for a while but I haven't tried it on Witcher III yet. It sounds like OCing is just a bad idea in general so I am just going to leave it bone stock.

You have the top of the line gpu so overclocking isn't too big of an issue fps wise. Overclocking so all about playing with your gpu until you find a stable point to your liking.

Not really if you're just gaming. The real fps jumper in games comes from gpu overclocks.

I mean I guess any OC I do that is stable on STOCK voltage is going to be pretty safe right?

After going sli I got my PC temps down lower than my stock single card temps so I assume as Lomb as temps are good ( 83)

And u don't add voltage there will be no harm

Samsung tends to clock higher on maxwell cards.

 

Samsung VRAM is the only type of vram I consistently see getting past 8000 mhz, hynix is really hit or miss it seems.

 

 

Alright...is it true that overclocking the memory doesn't do much for gaming? I could just increase the power to 109% and do +100 on the core clock and call it good.

 

 

Memory helps quite a bit, I have 2 benchmark screenshots I did with stock and overclocked memory, difference was pretty decent.

 

I will post them once I find them.
