Hello everyone

New to the linus forums hope everyone is doing well.

So i am thinking of getting opinions on a possible setup for gaming crysis 3 and witcher 3 maxed out @ 1080p.

Here is the list

I7 4790k cpu

Msi r9 390 gpu

Antec edge 650w psu

32gb kingston hyper x savage 1600 ram

1tb wd blue hdd

Cm seidon 120v cpu cooler

Crucial bx100 250gb ssd

Asus h97 pro gamer mobo

Corsair carbide spec 01 chassis

Lg 24x optical drive

I wont be doing much overclocking but rather stay focused on strong stock pc.

Thoughts?

If you won't be doing much overclocking... or any, for that matter, give me a sec.

@Ryno85 welcome to the forums :D Please use pcpartpicker for this kind of thing and remember to follow your own threads in the future  :)

Also, what's your location? Helps when using pcpartpicker. And, what's your budget?

If you're not overclocking, you'd be better off with a Xeon 1231v3.

Lose 32GB, 8GB or 16GB is enough

If you're not overclocking loose the watercooler and get a cheap air cooler it's more worth it and get a i5 you don't really need i7 for gaming

Get a better case it has horrible cable management get a NZXT S340

Just wondering, is it absolutely necessary to have an optical drive? Things like steam and origin have made them effectively obsolete.

This would be a very good choice, the 4790k is a very good cpu, i am using it in my own gaming rig and it is a beast, even though its OC to 4.7 GHZ its still a beast at stock speeds, plus its a virtual 8-core with hyper-threading, i dont know much about amd gpu's but i stay away from them in general, but if your budget calls for it, amd is a good choice

You should be bgetting a Z97 motherboard so you can overclock that CPU. In addition, you don't need a 4790K for faming,an I5-4690K is perfectly fine, as the I7's hyperthreading won't benefit you unless you are streaming or recording gameplay. In addition, the R9 390 can be very power hungry, and stress tests have made it draw around 340W of power alone. Add in the other parts and an overclocked CPU, you will want a but more leverage on the power supply, preferably 750W to get a much more ideal efficiency.

The EVGA B2 750W is higher quality than the Antec and is around the same price.

You could always install an OS over USB, it's just that Microsoft now has available Windows 10 purchases with a USB. But it is not work it. It costs about $20 more than a DVD, and you can create your own bootable USB by downloading and burning the Windows 10 ISO.

Does that case have optical bays or is that the s440. Good lord thay make nice chassis

Out of the case I listed only the Arc Midi R2 has some but you don't really need it for any reason, for installing Windows that could easily be done off of a USB and you can always use an external dvd for any media playing or for download motherboard drivers etc

I have heard AMD's cards are more power hungry and run hotter under load than the nvidia counterparts

AMD cards do use more power but it's quite exaggerated (eg 390 only uses around 50W more than a 970 on load)

AMD being hot is kinda exaggerated and misunderstood, AMD cards aren't really siginifcantly hotter apart from the 290/290X/390/390X but a lot of people don't understand that the card was designed to perfectly run a 95C operating temperature but either way good aftermarket solutions like Sapphire and keep the card under 73C

Hi Ryno firstly awesome to see a fellow South African on the forum. I understand that PCPP is not really an option for use because we work in a much different currency so i'll try to help you best I can. If your goal is just gaming then go with an i5 4670K it would help save you dearly. You don't need that amount of RAM go instead with a 16GB Kit, also change the PSU to a more reputable branding such as Seasonic and also get a Z series motherboard to overclock your CPU. A good shop in SA yo buy PC parts is wootware, hope it helped.
