Overclocking Sideeffects?

Go to solution Solved by Tedster,

What are the good and bad side effects if overclocking your GPU?

Benefits:

  • Better performance in games and benchmarks
  • "Free performance"

Drawbacks:

  • Potential stability issues
  • More power draw and therefore more heat, meaning that the card will run hotter and/or louder.
  • If running hotter, you can reduce the life of the card.
  • You could void your warranty with most cards if you flash the BIOS to be able to overclock further...and potentially ruin the card if you fail when trying to flash the BIOS for whatever reason.

pros:

faster speed

better performance

cons:

heat

U cant really break ur gpu, since u cant really over voltage it. if u apply too much speed then it will just crash.

Good improve fps and game proformance

Negative if you fuck up you can break your gpu. But you usally dont don't

Okay I see. Those are some serious drawbacks. Looks like mild OC'ing seems to be the solution to me if I do any.

What about Overclocking Side Effects for the CPU? Do you know of those?

They are generally almost the same.

other cons:

void warrenty, but this is just what ppl say, the manufacture wont know if u overclock it or not

may reduce the lifespan of gpu

instability is not really a cons, as long as u dont push the clock speed to much, it will be stable

maybe u had a bad unit, since I always set my voltage and power to max and temps are fine. Idk how it can die if u apply to much speed.

it was a good card got it for 2 months had it oc'ed mildly for a few weeks decided to up it and all of a sudden the card stopped working I tested it in my brothers rig and ded not fans spinning no anything

lel u got unlucky there. I always push my card until I cant even apply even 5 more mhz

but make sure you r mother word supports overclocking for your CPU and make sure you have a aftermarket cooler the hate from overclocking can ruin your CPU with a stock cooler

Yea Ive got all of that checked already. Im just trying to decide when it comes to CPU if its worth buying an overclockable one

I would unless you plan to upgrade soon and not want to get the longest life out of one CPU if you overclocking you can have it last longer in the,re of what games it can run

Only thing to watch out for is that with GPUs the voltage is locked down to the point where even putting the slider to max will not fry your card. With CPUs this is not the case you could put voltage as high as you want and could in theory fry your card. Be cautious when overvolting your CPU (within in reason bumping voltage by a bit on an unlocked chip should pose 0 threat to your processor however dont go crazy as unlike your CPU entering in the wrong number by accident could kill it)
